Transmission question

#1 Post by tom coughlin » Wed Jul 18, 2018 10:28 am

My 1955 got a transmission upgrade from a PO to a dual mount B tranny. Since I have bought back the original engine, I'd like to get the tranny a bit closer to original. For common sense reasons I'll retain the dual mount. I have a VW/519 empty case (which will need machining) but I understand that the later B gears really won't work in it. I think I need a 644 or 716 tranny for it's internals to build up the 519. I'm trying to understand what other potential problems may arise. Two things I'm concerned about are the intermediate plate and nose cone. What others need to be addressed?
Any advice from those with related experience is most welcome. Tom

Hi Tom
first question is your car a 1956 model? if so it would have had a 519 transmission with a dual mount. even though you have a B 741 trans now it may have a 644 nose cone. personally i would not do what you are proposing.

It is a May 1955 production date bent window. Why wouldn't you do this? Tom

Hi the tunnel case is an upgrade to split case even if you machine a VW case it won't be as strong or last as long. people are telling you to start off with the VW case because all the Porsche ones are worn out now.

741 internals will certainly fit a 519 case.
