Abarth Exhaust thread
I'm a fan of early accessories. The Abarth exhaust is no exception. I"m definitely a noob compared to the majority of the custodians of our 356's.
I wanted to create this thread to discuss original and aftermarket Abarth exhaust's. Please chime in with your comments, observations & experience.
So far I've found 3 models of Abarths:
1) Pre A Early model:
2) The P1000 - What I've nicknamed the 6 ringer. A later 356 Abarth:
This is a pic of mine:
3) The P-912 version:

Post a pic
I have seen many of these on the walls in peoples shops and in pictures online. I have never seen one on a car, aside from an old beetle.
Could someone please post a few pics from the rear to show this actually installed on a car?

Here is my 55 coupe while I had the bumpers off for restoration. This Abarth was on a 55 Speedster at one time, but showed little use. I found it in a local body shop under a work bench. I could see it as I drove by one day and the door was open. The owner had sold the Speedster years ago in favor of a replica Speedster with a hopped up VW engine. This muffler would not fithis VW enignine so he sold it too me. I like the sound and equal length pipes.

abarth
heres a low down shot. It is a pretty close fit with an abarth.
make sure... when you are re-painting... to get the little exhaust cut out area on your pre a ... far away enough from the tail pipes... to avoid burning the paint. I suggest test fitting the engine with exhaust and rear bumper before block sanding...if you have done extensive metal work in this area.

I bought one NLA replica for the 53 paid $700US compared to $1700US I paid for the NOS Abarth, By the way I got a nice cut (3cm) on my ankle with the abarth tailpipes one time I was washing the 52.

We tested one of the stainless Abarth repros on the dyno last year. It made slightly more low and midrange torque but lost top end power above 5K compared to a stock exhaust (probably because it has more back pressure).

The sound is great. Based on the HP/Torque curve it's typical of what you get from an exhaust with more back pressure. I'm not sure why there is more back pressure but it's probably not from the small pipes, more likely something in the internals. I would think the exhaust would work fine on a Normal or Super, but probably not on a S90 or SC, especially a big bore with a cam.
