I would ride my 996 if we had no snow :-).... but in a few weeks i will check if i am still young enough to get down to the footrests 8)

Here is a picture from my friends speedster when he got it in 11/2007. He wanted to drive it at the "Ennstal Classic" in 07/2008.
So he had 9 months from a wreck to a restored (!) speedster. Possible or not, that was the question.
......I will post more pictures soon.

I never bought a Porsche in the EU. That's boring. I own 13 Porsches now but had 16. My girlfriend (and of course my bank) pushed me to sell some of them. :( I can't resist when i see a cool looking 356 for a reasonable price. I have to sell the 911's. too... need Money.

I pulled my Baby out of my barn today to put it on a hoist and check the condition of the undercarriage. Holy Moly !!!! I thought it's a rust free california car !!?? Is the "California Car" thing just a sales gimmick ?? I need to buy some sheet metal and a tinsnipes.
Of course i had to drive some km's (sorry...miles) at -4°C. What a great feeling....

I also started to repair my Speedster..... and the poor car is loosing more and more parts. It seems to end up in a full resoration which i do not (!!) want. I just want a running and driving Speedster...

The "Sandman" was at my garage and did what he had to do. Yes, there is still a speedster on my rottiserie. I thought it will be a half one after sandblasting. I am really happy with the good condition. Very little "Stamps" on the whole car but i have to replace the floorpan :( . It looks like a sieve now. The car is painted in "Epoxy Primer" right now and it's time to start the welding machine. I visited the "European Porsche Parade" two weeks ago to get motivated but there was only one speedster... it was my friend with his white beauty. My goal is to get the registration in August. Possible ??

It really hurts to see this pictures again...

I also realized that this car is a Moneyeater and i had to sell one of my 911 Turbos to recover my money.... and blow it in my Speedster.

I would loke to see more restoration pictures from other 356ers.

Erich,
Cool pictures. You should be quite happy with the condition of your speedster after blasting. Probably better than 90% of the cars out there. maybe even the "restored" ones! Your friend is not so lucky though. One heck of a mess.
Good luck,
DG

Hello 356 Brothers. I am Back, no not from my holidays.... I instructed my girlfriend not to open the door to my garage before the welding on my speedster is done. Last Saturday i saw the daylight again and my Speedster is without any hole or rust again. David, you are right it looked not bad but i am (was) not an expert with sheet metal and the welding machine so it took longer than i thought. I don't know how you guys learned welding but my friend (the metal guy) said "You are doing better work than me". Maybe an issue if you always think you are unable to do this stuff. You try it as as it looks perfect. My girfriend asked me very often "Who the hell will see this weldseam ever" Right, nobody but i know how it looks like under the paint.
Next step is the Paint job and to put put my Baby together again.

I have read the discussion about the "third point" for a safety belt so i added a aditional thread on the rear frame. I put a 4x2 inches 3mm thick plate inside the frame where the special seatbelt nut is welded on. I don't know what would kill me first, having no headrest or the stiff steering column... or both? It#s better not to think about it.

Snow?

#27 Post by Shane Balkowitsch »

You call that snow, for us North Dakota residents, that is more like a couple of flakes, not until you get 4 feet of snow at a time and get the wind coming across our Plains state making everything drift do you know snow. Last winter I opened my garage door up at Big Sky Circle and found a wall of snow as high as the hood of my Hummer, not that is snow. About 4 years back we had a snow storm here and you could not drive anywhere, you could walk down the streets but you would have to be careful because you would be walking on the tops of cars covered with the white stuff.

My little Outlaw will be tucked away in the winter in a heated garage, she will never see 1 flake if I have my way. :)

Thanks,
Shane

Re: 356 in Austria, Garage Pics

Last week i was sitting in my garage and we had just a little over 0° Celsius which is pretty cold for the end of October so i called my boss and told him "i need holidays". Yes from all, work, welding machine, garage, weather, speedster...a.s.o. He said ok go if you really come back. So i booked a flight to San Francisco and i am sitting in a Motelroom now in Oakland CA and will be in California till mid December. As welding and painting are not my favorites i decided to build a "Hot Rod" Engine for my car keeping my Numbers matching original. I think i read now every book about "how to build and modify" a 356 Engine. Reading is not all and i wanted to ask here if anybody can recommend me a "old skool" engine builder who can give me some advise about this.
I already have a good 912 case and very (!) big cylinders. I have been at "Elgin Camshafts" in Santa Rosa Yesterday and ordered a special camshaft. Dimitri was wondering that somebody is coming from Austria to order a camshaft direct in his shop :-). That's me.
So i still need a crankshaft, connecting rods, clutch, pistons and all the cylinderhead stuff...
I have also been at Jim Breazle and bought some parts there. It's always a plaesure to meet him. I love his old shop and he is famous now as he has been in our last magazine :-). I will be at EASY today to watch the cars as mentioned in the "Event Calendar".

I would be VERY happy to meet some of you guys during my trip through California. So if anybody is interested in meeting a crazy guy from asutria please let me know. I am pretty nosy and would like to know some of you in person. I also have a CA Cellphonenumber here: 310 465 8553.

My car as it is waiting for me in Austria. I really hoped to be ready in this seson... Yes, it can now starting to rust away again :-)
P8096313.JPG
I sold some of my other cars like the old Fiat, my Abarth and the 914-6 as this car is really eating all my money :-(. I always hope to get all back when driving the speedster when it's ready.

Hi,

back in Austria after 2 months in the USA participating some 356 meetings and the "Palms to Pines" meeting from the 356 Club of SoCal, looking for 356 parts, buying way too much parts, negotiating with too much guys about their cars, talking to some deep enthusiasts (and got pissed drunk with one of them..), watching the cars at "Cars and Coffe" in Irvine a.s.o. i have realized that nobody primered and painted my Speedster in the meantime...

After sweeping away all the spider webs i started to build my engine as i like the smell of melted aluminum more than the smell of paint... I took all the parts with me in the regular luggage and the custom guys must have thought i have antitank mine in my bag but it was just a Stage 2 clutch, a crankshaft and some small 48IDA's a.s.o.
Of course i had more luggage than "Paris Hilton" on my way home....

I got most parts together but i spend too less time on the car itself now.

The target:
A hot street engine with 150ftlbs or more and 160hp or more ? So basicly a "Torque Engine". Mountainroads in Austria cry for torque not hp 8)
Starting with a Porsche 912 90hp engine case, H-beam rods, chromoly crank, nikasil cylinders i calculated to get 2182cc so the targets should be achievable.

Transmission:
As i want to save all the original number matching stuff i want to use a Karmann Ghia transmission witch has a 4,125 ring and pinion -> 90 mph @ 4600 4th gear and you get them almost for free here in Austria.

Some of you may hate me for doing this but i can't resist.

Here are some pictures from my trip:

Selecting my "new" case. Of course a greasy one. There was a "mouse-nest" inside :D :D So i will call my new engine "mouse engine" like all the drag-racers in the US...

Spent again some weeks in the southwest of the US and met some really coool guys at the porsche LIT and at th open houses. The swap meet was great and i met an old guy who told me something about a 1958 coupe which is sitting in his barn for many years. To make long story short -> I bought the car 2 hours before my flight took off back to europe 8) . I just can not say no..
