Roadster windshield posts

#1 Post by William Boyd »

I have been looking for a passenger side windshield post, or set of posts for a 1961 T5 roadster. I was told that the earlier brass posts were better than the pot metal posts used on the roadster. Then someone wrote that the brass posts were for the convertible D and were not the same as the roadster. Has anyone replaced their roadster posts with the brass posts without changing the top frame and the windshield, or have both types to compare?

Thanks,
Bill Boyd

Roadster & Conv. D windshield posts

#2 Post by John Chatley »

According to the Spare Parts Catalogs, all Conv. Ds from #85501 through #86830 and T-5 Roadsters #86831 through # 87315 were equipped with the "red brass" windshield posts.

Roadster # 87316 (late 1960) on had the "light alloy"(pot metal) posts.

The windshield was made about 7/8" taller at Roadster #87516 in early 1961.

John

John,

I had roadster #87322 and it had brass posts complete with the last 3 digits of the chassis stamped on them so the reference is a little off. Of course, 322 may have went through the line before 315 as assembly was not in chassis order. Also I think the year is off as 87316 would have been a late '59 production and 87516 would be early '60.

To the original question, the brass posts seem to hold their chrome better. Other than that, it is certainly NOT worth trying to change from the later pot metal posts to the earlier brass posts. They also changed the top header bow by removing the locating pins. It is ALWAYS best to keep the original windshield frame on a D/roadster. These were hand built cars and changing frame pieces just causes more fit nightmares on the D/roadster windshield which is one of the most difficult items on any 356 model.
