Vertical chrome strip at rear edge of door window frame

#1 Post by Dave Wildrick »

There is a vertical chrome strip at the rear edge of the coupe door window frame. This is attached to the main chrome window frame with a row of very small, short, machine screws.

I noticed that the threads on several of these screws on my 65C coupe are stripped and the vertical strip is loose on the driver’s side door.

Is there a simple fix for these small screws?
Or do I have to tap the holes for the next larger size (assuming I can find similar machine screws in that size somewhere)?

Thanks for any advice.

Assuming that you can remove the "stripped" screws. Just try another good screw from the other door frame and see if they seat properly. If they do, then try and locate some from a "parts car". They are chrome plated brass oval headed screws and would be hard, if not impossible, to find, other than on a "parts car". There are a couple of Junk Yards on the West Coast that probably have some. Both of those Junk Yards get real tired of requests for screws and nuts and bolts, but one or the other will probably take the time to find them for you if you were to ask nicely.

Vertical chrome strip at rear edge of door window frame

Dave,

Since it's a trim piece to help with noise i'd try to fill the holes in question with epoxy JB Weld and let it cure well and drill and retap. Use very little torque and you migh win.
The window frame is most likely brass so I doubt just running a tap through will be of much benefit.

Dave,

From your description are you talking about the 4 machine screws that have a hex head nut on them? If so, when I re-chromed my rear quarter windows I simply took the screws out (gently lift up the door seal near the post) and took a sample to my nearby family owned hardware store for a match. I got eight new screws (Just a little longer than stock) and then cut them a tad longer than the stock screws. Put the hex head nut back on and I was back in business. Both NLA and Stoddards also sell hardward sets too.

Dave,

I just reread your post and realized you were not talking about the quarter windows.

Sorry,

Vertical chrome strip at rear edge of door window frame

#6 Post by Guest »

Dave.
Try rolling some aluminum foil around the treads of the bolts and just
put them in every so lightly. I have been able to helicoil them using a
3 mm kit, cutting the coils so you use only the 2-3 turns needed and be
very careful. Find someone that has used helicoils before to do this.
You can also try a Locktite epoxy product that is mixed with carbon
fibers. Put some on the bolts and screw them in and when set up it might
give you some "new" threads. Again go light on the torque. Ultimate
repair is to braze the holes and retap and then rechrome.
