so where do you people buy parts on the west coast? I needed a new front cover gasket today, C or912. if I order from Stoddard its a week or more before I see it, i'm on the central Oregon coast. I tried several places and nobody had a front cover gasket or would answer the phone, finally did get one from Zims. there has to be someplace on the west coast that parts could be bought and received in 3 days normal shipping.

since the gasket sets come with extra front cover gaskets there should be plenty around. If you can't get any snd me your address and I will send you one(or2) Priority Mail for $10.

on the same subject the Vendors listed are usually not the best value for mechanical parts cost wise. Shops that work on vehicles get the parts they need from the same major warehouses that supply those vendors that have high overhead to catalog/stock/sell/etc. Also there are other outlets/manufacturers that supply parts outside the major warehouses that can be dealt with without as many middle men if you search around.

Actually, it would be the rear cover gasket, or the third piece gasket.
Jay, what prompted you to suddenly need the gasket? Every time I've needed one, I pretty much anticipated the need by at least several days. I'd also suggest putting together a list and buying spares to have on hand. Either that, or move closer to a source......

Jay, had you posted a 'wanted' ad in the classifieds I could have had one in the mail the same day. Like Jacques stated, there are a lot of extras available from the gasket kits.
Hey there George Walling...we are going to have to get some S. Oregon folks together and plan some drives....how about one to over your way - maybe to tour the Favell Museum of Western art.....before we get too old and our kids/grandkids have our licenses taken away.

The front cover/3rd piece gasket is p/n 616 101 391 00 -- yes, in the gasket set but available from Stoddard NLA stock, about $8. See photo below. If ordered by one PM West Coast Time, you could have had it the next day as Ron suggested. Or, could it could be put in a manila envelope and sent 1st class mail for a few dollars and you'd have it probably three days. Take your choice versus your time.

If I was in a hurry, I would look locally for a auto parts store that will order overnight. If you look up the Victor Reinz 08-18238-02 gasket set, $52.50, it will give you what you wanted. Here in the SF Bay Area I could order it by 2pm and have it delivered by 9am tomorrow to my neighborhood Winchester Auto Parts.
Other wise, I use several resellers, Pelican Parts, which is super fast, drop ships from Bosch and other places overnight, Sierra Madre can ship overnight too, Klasse 356, Ed can get you parts fast too. I use Zim's, Stoddard, Parts Klassic, and others. If you take the time to find the part numbers, and do an internet search for cross reference numbers it is amazing how close the stock is. Also it helps to have the "underground network" of locals who do work, many times those will have a box of parts. I have at least 3 of those gaskets in my gasket stash, as I have been doing earlier engines.

Good advice by Jacques and Steve. However, if you are in the middle of Wyoming, or in Jay's case, on the coast of Oregon, it's not a quick or economical delivery location for old Porsche parts. As for prices, these gasket sets have been "price competitive" for years. Lesson might be, if you are a shop doing 356's every month, it might make sense to pay ten bucks less and stock a couple of sets.

Jacques' suggestion about modifying the earlier gasket may well come in handy in your garage Sat/Sun Afternoon. See photo below for comparisons of the early and late gaskets, showing the only difference is in the "jog out" near the corner.
