Body panels stamped with number on 64' 356c

#1 Post by Jason Parolini »

I wanted to know where I might find body panels on my 64' 356c stamped with the same # that matches the Karman tag located on the drivers side door jam?

Jason:

Last three digits on the inside of the door panels
Perhaps the deck lid upper latch
Perhaps the hood upper latch
Hidden number behind the right side hinge cover.

As Mike said but there have been cases where hood number is on drivers side hinge frame support and even passengers side support. Karmann seems to have more variability than Reutter. Of course all this assumes that the Karmann tag in drivers side hinge cover matches the main chassis number just behind the metal spare tire tie down in the front compartment!! viewtopic.php?t=25236 https://porsche356registry.org/article/250 Here is a picture of engine lid latch number.

The chassis number on the tag on the inside drivers door jam does match the number stamped into the body near spare tire. It also matches the tag in the same location. I also found the last two numbers of the chassis number on the latch of the deck lid. But I don't see any number stamped onto the front trunk lid anywhere. Does that mean it may have been replaced at some point? Or does the front trunk lid just not (always) have a number stamped onto it from the factory? My car is a Karman and not a Reutter.

It could be stamped on the upper trunk latch. Some Karmann chassis have that only.

Drauz also just stamped the last 2 chassis number digits on the hood latch. Nothing on the hinges like Reutter.

Were you referring to the rear deck lid or the front trunk lid?
If it was referring to the front trunk lid, I don't see a latch like that on my front hood

Here is a photo C J took of his for sale restored 68K original mile 64C Karmann no numbers found when he looked. Maybe look with a mirror on the back(towards hood) of the finger pad? If not there then probably no number like C J's I stole the picture from the unnumbered hood thread I started: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=49558

And I just checked with Paul Hatfield who is a numbers Guru. He is redoing a 65 Karmann coupe. No numbers anywhere on front hood or front hood latch. So that one Joins C J's Karmann coupe with no numbers.

I've worked on a few C's and haven't seen any numbers on the latches.

My '64C was built in Dec. '63 and is a Karmann bodied car. The last 2 numbers of the VIN are 64.

My Reutter '64 SC has the last 3 digits stamped on the engine lid rain tray on the upper right corner. It is visible through the grill.
No marking on the lid latch.
