Wind Noise

#1 Post by Peter M. Zimmermann »

OK, guys and gals, the 1958 coupe in my garage is running well, but... No, I'm not here to tell you how to fix/reduce wind noise, I'm here to ask what you've done that might have worked. I have replaced door seals that were in pretty bad shape, and that made a, maybe, 20% improvement.

That said, at about 50 mph the car becomes very loud, by 70 it's close to deafening. I don't know how old the windshield and back window seals are, but I think they might be original. The rear quarter window seals are also quite old, but our search engine reveals that I don't want to do those!

Please tell me what you did that made minor, or major, improvements with the wind noise in your 356. Thank you for reading!

An aftermarket vent window wind deflector made the biggest difference to my 59 coupe. Of course that is only effective for the open window wind buffeting.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

One way to check to see if you have good door seals is to close them on a sheet of paper and see if there are any areas where it is very loose. Also, maybe have a passenger see if they can isolate where the noise is coming from.

Mike As you know you need to close the door trapping $100 bills when checking for fitment of the seals. Check for air entry around windshield seal by passenger using lit match maybe? viewtopic.php?t=13961 Personally I vote for a new windshield seal to solve your problem. They cause a LOT of wind noise in a 2000 BMW 740i when bad. And you might want to check on the seals at the door bottoms used on T6 cars if all else fails. BTW Beautiful A Coupe!!

O.P. I love your A in black. That's my 1st choice for re-painting my 58 coupe. I recall when swapping the sunroof clip that there were sound deadening packs stuffed in the C-pillars. I never got beyond finishing once the new roof was welded on and got the windows back in. It has lots of weird noise coming from the C-pillars, especially in the rain. I do have the optional factory external unobtanium wind deflectors. I will be collaborating with a fellow registry member later this Spring to fabricate replicas and will offer them to those interested. No price point yet.

Ha! and the knob on the left side of the radio works well to get rid of ticking valves and knocking rods

Hood seal, perhaps?
I think that's where my wind noise is coming from.

IMO wind noise comes from vent window seals and not so much door seals.

I have a similar T1 car, and it is also noisy .. it has been ever since I owned it.
I have installed sound deadening (like fat max) , then over top of that, I put the regular sound deadening, still noisey.
It would be interesting to have a sound meter in a car, and move it around to see where the noise was coming from.
on the highway, it is difficult to talk to the passenger, although possible with a bit of a lean into the centre ..
I keep thinking for a longer drive i would get a pair of noise canceling headphones... not sure that sounds all that safe though..
