Beveled Case Washers
Is there anything in the engine that looks really similar to the beveled acorn nut washers on the engine case (part number 616.101.191.00)?
I was pretty diligent about labeling things as they came off. I ended up with 5 "acorn nut washers" (1 not pictured) and 10 "case through bolt washers" which I kept separate from each other. They all look the same to me. Best I can tell from the parts catalog, there should be only 7, which go with little 0-rings.
By now, I know that I can't trust that what I took off this engine is correct. I just want to be sure I'm not confusing these with another part that has some subtle but important difference.
Thank you.

Do you have all 16 head nut washers? They are the only thing I can think of that are similar.

the 16 head nut washers are 19 mm diameter with no bevel. The 7 case washers are 21 mm with the bevel to capture the rubber oil control rings.

Re: Beveled Case Washers
There are a total of 7 case stud/bolt washers with bevels to hold the o-rings. There are 6 acorn nuts and 1 bolt head that each take a washer and o-ring for a total of 7.

Re: Beveled Case Washers
The beveled case washer, 616-101-191-00, measures 10 x 20.
The flat cyl head washer, 999-031-062-02, measures 10 x 19 this washer looks like just a plain 'ole washer but the 19 mm OD is critical to fit down in the hole of the cylinder head. It must be used only with cyl head nuts with a groove on the OD.

Aren’t the head washers also slightly thicker than average?

Re: Beveled Case Washers
They are a little bit thick and also hardened. Over the years there have been washers supplied that were not exactly correct. As Brad said, they must not be too large of ID or they don't seat correctly and/or get stuck in position where they seat. If they stick into the head and you don't notice then you assemble the engine with a second washer and that causes the rocker stand to not be level which causes leaks at the o-ring and valve adjuster problems. It is important that all of the washers under the rocker stand are the same thickness as well as only using 1 washer under each nut. Early engines have longer head nuts and do not use washers. Early nuts do not have a groove around the middle, late ones have a groove and require a washer.Martin Benade wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2019 5:28 pm Aren’t the head washers also slightly thicker than average?

This is consistent with what I was able to find in the parts book.C J Murray wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2019 2:42 pm There are a total of 7 case stud/bolt washers with bevels to hold the o-rings.
So if there are no other beveled washers on the engine, I guess for me to end up with 15, the turkey before me must have been using them for cylinder head washers too.

Thanks for this detail Brad. It will help me when I get to installing the heads. I'm guessing I will not have the right washers on hand...Brad Ripley wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2019 4:57 pm The flat cyl head washer, 999-031-062-02, measures 10 x 19 this washer looks like just a plain 'ole washer but the 19 mm OD is critical to fit down in the hole of the cylinder head. Re: Beveled Case Washers
Before you put the heads on the engine stick a magnet down each hole to check for stuck washers. Sometimes the eye can be fooled.

Re: Beveled Case Washers
Or if any of them are 20 mm they might be stuck beyond what a magnet could pull out. Check very thoroughly.

Yes, it will take more than a magnet to get them out.Martin Benade wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2019 8:29 pm Or if any of them are 20 mm they might be stuck beyond what a magnet could pull out. Check very thoroughly.

An M10 Tap on an extension works well to snag the oversized OD stuck washer in the head (but go lightly).

Re: Beveled Case Washers
Well at least they should not fool the magnet. If it sticks to anything then there is a washer in there, very simple test.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Re: Beveled Case Washers
Good point David. As for the tap idea, an 11 or 12 mm may work, the 10 mm head studs slide right through the washers, as would that tap.
