Help finding notchback quarter window part

#1 Post by David Aronson »

I am just finishing the install of the quarter windows of my notchback. There is a small plastic seal/washer that insulates the chrome deco/bolt that goes through the window.
See Picture. I have left a note with Int. Merc. but do not find it in his catalog, nor at the regular suppliers. Anyone know of a source?

If you cannot source it a sleeve of rubber around the bolt and a rubber or plastic washer would work pretty well. A really good hardware store should have such washers.

Check McMaster Carr, vibration damping bushing, to see if that will work. There are probably other sources as well maybe even your local hardware store.

I have looked for a replacement but they are rubber. These are plastic. I might have a friend 3D build these with his printer. I need four. This part is only used, as far as I know, for the notchback and the hardtop for the cabriolet that has the articulating quarter window.

Look for "plastic sleeve washers".

I think the VW Type 34 qtr window latch uses the same grommets. See below for illustrations. Check with type 34 club guys -- maybe they know where to find those parts: 113-847-205/207. The Porsche part 644-543-491 30 is long gone.

That type of grommet is called a vibration damping grommet you'll find such here: https://www.mcmaster.com/9311k111

By Jove, I think you've got it, Brad. Looking at the West Coast Metric catalogue, there is part #143-320 for the quarter window latches. My guess is Wolfsburg West and others also carry it.

I had some made. I did find something interesting. I have several quarter windows for the notch. I measured the hole on 5 different pieces of glass. There seems to be two different diameters. They are either 10.5mm or 12.8mm in diameter.
So, I had a run of each made. They fit fine. I needed to make a jig to drill the 1/4" hole in them. The process to manufacture these was complicated by the hole so I decided that, to save some engineering time as well as make it a bit cheaper,
I would do the drilling. No need for a VW part if you can substitute custom made Porsche replicas. thank you all for your interest. After all this, I looked up the part in the PET. 644-543-493-26. Listed as quarter window washer. I found them
at Pelican as a special order item. I ordered a set just for comparison. Cost, .25 each. FUN

It has been a while since this issue played. The part Pelican listed was NLA. I checked with the Metric and it is also NLA. So, if there is a need for these parts, I have a couple dozen that I will be glad to offer for the price of a stamp.

Not that I know of.... I have refinished mine and purchased a new set of used quarter windows that had the hinges included. I do have a supply of rubberized washers as stated above. Glad to send a set to you.

Re: Help finding notchback quarter window part

#15 Post by Greg Bryan »

I am currently restoring, or at least resurrecting, a cab hardtop. The one I have has the fixed rear quarter glass. I'd love to see a hardtop with the opening windows to see if it is possible/practical to convert to the pop-out windows. I understand that the notch is different from the cab hardtop, at least the rear window is not interchangeable to my understanding.
Actually, I have two hardtops - a completely stripped one that came on my car when I bought it, and a rusted out one I bought for all the hardware. I think quite a few hardtops were ruined when they were propped up beside a garage with the rear bottom-most window frame sitting in moist grass or dirt.
I do have the interior quarter window garnishes for both the fixed and pop-out windows - they are very different. The pop-out latch appears to screw to the garnish itself and not into the top.
What are the hinges in the front like - an actual hinge? Is there a frame around the glass? Has anyone performed this change (hardtop fixed to opening quarter window) - I don't know if it's even possible?
Thanks! This hardtop is one of the more challenging projects I've gotten myself into ...
