continental for sale on the BAT and continental list

#1 Post by ThibautBoey »

Hi all,
I saw this for sale and I wonder if this is a real continetal? I suppose so because the road scholars continental is a December 54 528xx. this is 12 chassis numbers removed and the pictures show the holes in the inside fender where the continental scripts were mounted.

I try to make a list with all the continentals, if I had to know when the first and last were delivered, this would be a bit easier. What I now know is that the scholars car is the oldest I know and the youngest # 54222

I have a continental # 53768 and continental is not listed on the kardex. I assume that 99% of all Hoffman cars supplied during end 54 trough oktober 55 are continentals even though it is not listed on the kardex.

Jenks had a Continental delivered in Europe (he was the Continental correspondent) which had a UK plate UYY 34, I'll check my books as I remember it may have been a LHD car.
The book "Jenks A passion for motorsport" has pictures that show UYY34 with the steering wheel on the left.

Add 52979 to your list. Continental not on Cardex, but I have known car since 1956 and always with Continental badges. Bought it from original owner - never restored. Came originally with blunt nose hood handle.

You can add 53449 to your database. I have owned the car since 1972; it is numbers matching and it's always had the Continental badges (and a blunt-nose hood handle).
The Kardex on 53449 does not list the Continental designation, but I cannot recall ever seeing a Kardex that did list Continental. However, the COA from Porsche N. America does list the car as a Continental - delivered to Hoffman 05/10/1955. Supposedly only 1500 and 1500S cars were designated as Continentals but Hoffman only imported 1500s and 1500 Supers, so you're most likely correct that 99% - maybe 100% of Hoffman cars were Continentals during this period.

Hi Spencer,
53449 has been added to the list. Thank you for that! Had you seen standing between the registry owner cars.
See here a kardex with the continental listed. This car is for sale here in Europe in a very bad condition on a VW chassis :?

I have eight Kardexes for '55 coupes & cabs in my file and found this one with the Continental designation also. The other seven don't say one way or the other.

I once owned 60900 which was a Continental, though the Cardex made no mention. I confirmed it with the late Olaf Lang.

60900 Continental Cabriolet
One of the non-continental Kardex examples I have in my files.
Post a photo if you have one Jim. Standard interior for 5402 Turkish Red cabriolets was 2180 Beige Rose, so black interior must have been a special order car.
