Question on front license plate mounting for 356a Speedster.

#1 Post by Steve Raucher »

OK just recieved a "Fix it ticket" from CHP for no front license plate.
Speedster has no front holes drilled and I would like to keep it that way.
Any suggestions on what is out there to do this? Will CHP accept plate being held on with velcro?
A thin band of material one for each side to mount plate tucked under the front of hood coming down makes sense, but unsure if hood would close without damage.
What do you guys do to mount plate? No front bumper on this car.
Thank you.
Steve

Hi Steve,
I've seen people make front license plate brackets that mount to one of the front bumper mounts and hold the plate to the side, right in front of one of the bumper through-holes. If you don't mind an asymmetric look, this could work. Or you could just leave it as is and wait another 20 years until you get another fix-it ticket. :-)

Cheers,

Have you considered to use a license plate sticker? Don't know if it's legal where you live, it is where i live...

Steve - I made a front license mount for my 57 T1A coupe that doesn't require drilling the bumper. I posted the instructions with pictures in the "356 Projects" section:

http://porsche356registry.org/356talk/4/32397.html

Post-post edit: Sorry, Steve, I just carefully re-read your post. I missed the fact that you don't have a front bumper, so my fix will not work for you.

The idea of having an asymmetric plate---mounted to a bracket that bolts to one of the bumper bracket mounts just behind the front body panel---should work.

Thanks Greg,
Good suggestion. I was able to take your advise.
Damn CHP and their quotas.
Hope to see you at 356car breakfast.

The Velcro idea does work too - I have it on my Healey (no bumpers).

Hi Steve, put the velcro on just before you get the ticket written off, then remove it before it hurts the paint. 8)

Steve,
In SF, it is considered an attempt to avoid the traffic light cameras; $100 fine (a while ago; who knows how much now), plus the fixit.
And, in SF, they are commonly only checked by the meter-maids, meaning you can get away with it by parking off-street (I did for several years).

Steve: do you have an over rider bar? If so, use the rubber insulated clamps to attach it to the bar. If no bar, I fabricated a bracket using aluminum angle stock with holes drilled to match the drain holes of the bumper and holes at 7 inches with rivnuts for the frame and plate. The bracket is bolted to the bumper. In between the bracket is a strip of thin rubber to protect the paint in the bumper. I use hex head cap nuts to fasten the frame and plate to the bracket.

The bracket is painted body color and I have not mounted the plate but could quickly do so if I'm ever stopped.

Some municipalities in California are more vigorous in their enforcement if missing front plates due to license plate readers and toll roads.

Try Copollo's. He makes a great license plate bracket that attaches to the front bumper using pressure.

In Idaho, at least in my county, if there is no visible means for attaching a plate, e.g., holes in the body or bumper, you are exempt from the front plate requirement. Our Speedster passes the test.
