1958 speedster rear like steering under hard braking.
Pulling to right with hard braking. Feels like rear steering. Brakes are adjusted and tire pressure checked.

Could be blocked rubber brake lines in need of replacement. Wouldn't hurt to check the brake shoe settings. Sometimes the shoes are not positioned correctly and will affect the braking, especially under hard use.

Were the drums turned and the shoes arced? Also check the wheel cylinder.

Also check the spring plate bolts.

Maybe this should be a sticky given the 356C brake thread from earlier. There seems to be a lot of interest in pulling brakes.

Bad spring plate bushings can be a big factor in creating the "hook and ladder" effect.

Maybe your should should get the car properly aligned. This cannot be done with a piece of string in your garage because you cannot find the center line of the car! Each wheel of the car can point in a different direction. A concept that seems difficult to understand. al zim It is highly unlikely that once the brakes are assembled properly adjusted and used for a a few stops that the prake shoe relationship to the drum would change. Follow your shop manual.

Doesn't sound like an alignment problem to me.David James Allison wrote: ↑Thu Aug 15, 2019 6:35 pm Pulling to right with hard braking. Feels like rear steering. Brakes are adjusted and tire pressure checked.
I beg to differ with you, Al. Using a plumb bob on a piece of string and dropping points from all four wheels onto my garage floor (now concrete... what a difference), then rolling the car one half wheel turn forward and repeating, I get a pretty accurate alignment picture. This is NOT to be used after collision repairs or other drastic chassis work, however. For that a jig is necessary.
(Of course, I'm one of the unbathed types on here who owns a set of tools, a few books, and does his own engine rebuilds, so my advice might be suspect.......)
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Re: 1958 speedster rear like steering under hard braking.
The guys at Road Scholars In Durham NC figured out the material in the shoes had deteriorated causing the problem.
The car had been restored many years ago and the former owner rarely drove the car. Cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed.
Thanks for all the feed back.

After figuring out the issue a couple of years ago I started having the same problem.. This time it was rear wheel bearing leaking grease.
