Sorry Guys
My source was out of pocket for a couple of days. What I was told was that after Porsche took it away from Hoffman some of the larger strategically located dealerships with the space also acted as importers so that all the cars did not have to come through NY and then be re-distributed around the country. This gentleman knew the owners of the Dealership in Northbrook Who were also the distributors for about a five state area(including Minnesota- my 63 was sold in St. Paul but was handled through Northbrook). So Kenilworth was probably a large dealership in NJ. It would follow that there were approximately 10 or so of these "Handlers" in the US. Most of the data I have is older and shows Hoffman as the handler but I do have one more data point. My 69 was sold by Vasek but the Handler was Volkswagen Pacific.

Kennelworth, N.J. is the adjoining town to where I live. No current evidence of any auto importers but I'll see if I can find any history from the early sixties. The Port Newark/Elizabeth shipping facilities are only six miles away, so it does sound logical that a car could come in through the seaport and be handled at a nearby facility. Cars are brought in every week through these seaports by the hundreds. Currently the only German imports there are BMW which has a large facility at nearby Port Bayonne.

I do not have a copy of all the US Dealers in the day but that would be a start to see if there was a Porsche dealer there. There is also the possibility that if there was not a dealership that could handle the import duties there that with it being such a large port they contracted separately outside of the dealership structure.

I note in my own Kardex a reference in the last service entry to P.C. Southwest, which I assume is a reference to Porsche Cars Southwest. Would this be the distributor to whom a European car would be shipped? My car was purchased by an Air Force Captain in Weisbaden and apparently stayed in Germany for a few years. It does not appear to have been purchased through a US dealership.

Thanks, Tom. I think this stuff is really interesting. The Kardex provided a lot of info not available on the COA, such as this point of entry for my car.
