Re: Chrome exhaust tips
Joris where does set screw go on chrome tip? Was set screw used on later T-1 type cars?

Michael
Sorry, these aren't the greatest images but I think you'll get the idea.
A steel rivet nut was attached to the tube with a slotted round head set screw to secure the tube to the exhaust pipe(s).
On T-1 engines that had them that was the original arrangement for the chrome tips through 1957.
The set screw was deleted on factory replacement tips. Instead, a couple dimples were pressed into the tube wall to provide a tight press-fit on the exhaust pipe(s).

Re: Chrome exhaust tips
Would anybody know the dimensions of the original chrome exhaust tip for the late pre-A and T1? From the photos in this thread it looks like they were quite a bit longer than the currently offered factory replacement "Porsche Sport Muffler Chrome Tip" (160 mm).

Approx. 8" or 203mm in length.Andreas Dreher wrote: ↑Mon Dec 21, 2020 8:18 pm Would anybody know the dimensions of the original chrome exhaust tip for the late pre-A and T1?
For the past 30+ years factory replacements have been supplied in the shorter length that you mentioned - - -

Re: Chrome exhaust tips
I made some of these with the correct engraving etc. For the 4-cams. Made the flares separately and soldered these to the tips as my tool and die making skills were insufficient to figure out how to make a tool to make the straight flares

I've made several of this type: straight tube, machined steel ring with about 1/8" square cross section, silver solder ring over end of tube, flush the outer end, and chrome ceramic coat. Pretty easy.

Re: Chrome exhaust tips
Yes it is not that hard. Biggest thing is that you need to grind a small HSS radius tool for the inner profile which has a slight radius on the originals. Still would love to figure out how to make a pressing tool to do this the way the factory did itHarlan Halsey wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 4:41 am I've made several of this type: straight tube, machined steel ring with about 1/8" square cross section, silver solder ring over end of tube, flush the outer end, and chrome ceramic coat. Might the originals have been spun to their shape?

Re: Chrome exhaust tips
Thank you all for the input. Don, thanks for the dimension. In an earlier post, I found a photo of what looks like an early version of the exhaust tip (about 8" long, but no set screw). Is this the logo you are referring to, Joris?

Re: Chrome exhaust tips
Looking at Andreas' exhaust tip reminded me of a pair of NOS tips I had about 25 years ago. They had a square rolled edge and a manufacturer's engraving or stamp near the tip. Don't remember what it looked like.

Re: Chrome exhaust tips
Andreas, yes, thats the logo. I have seen tips with this logo used all the way up to the Carrera 2's. I actually used a tip from an original Carrera 2 muffler to make the art work for the engraving. As pointed out by Don, they went from the set screw to the dimples as seen on your tip somewhere in '57.

Re: Chrome exhaust tips
Don, the tips I studied had a regular nut ( din 934??) silver soldered to them. The screw I believe was a din 86. The din spec for those has changed so those wanting to be correct will have to make some on the latheDonald Zingg wrote: ↑Sun Aug 11, 2019 7:33 pm
