Front Hood Release T6

#1 Post by Nathanan Chuengsamran »

Hi,
I'm restoring a 1963 T6 coupe in Thailand. A sample of any 356 is very rare here.
I'm working on positioning the front hood release cable. Can any one show me photos of where the release knob should be?
Thank you in advance.

The release knob on a left hand drive 356 is just above the emergency brake bracket. Look for a tube. That tube runs along the left side of the trunk.

If you are doing a lot of restoration work on your car, it would help to buy one of the books showing how everything fits and looks. Contact Dr. Bill Block at 'Block's Books' and I am sure he will have any number of informative items for you to choose from. It will save you a lot of time and grief, not to mention money, to have a good guide to help you along.

It just happens to show in this picture of a parking brake handle.

While your latches will be different from a C this link might also be helpful: viewtopic.php?t=45697 as there is a picture from the side and a measurement of the tube coming out of the firewall.

I'd also like to add that there should be an emergency hood release cord. It is attached to the hood latch lever and extends through two holes in the side of the battery box. If you Google the topic, there is an article written by Roy Lock (R.I.P) with pictures of the cord which was essentially German clothes line.

With this cord, if the hood release cable happens to break, you can unlatch the hood.

Mike, you sure about that on a T6? My '65 "C" has no such provision.

T6 B had it. C latch was different and if cable breaks it fails to open setting. If you ever have to attach a new cable on a C latch you will understand.

Thanks again.
It's hard for me to figure out such small details as the car originally didn't have any floor. The lower part was completely rusted. But the body work is almost done now - after 4 years.
