Is speedster front different from coupe’s?

#1 Post by Rafik Dous »

I noticed the driver’s headlight on my ‘58 Speedster is sitting slightly lower than the other side so I am not sure what’s going on. The lip of the wheel arch is also sitting slightly lower than the other side
Got me wondering if the car had been damaged and the guard was replaced at some stage. Is the coupe front fender different from a speedster fender? I didn’t think so but not sure
Or maybe it was just replaced with poor workmanship

I assume poor workmanship; or a pre-A fender?

"A" speedster fenders are the same as "A" coupe fenders

Think I remember that the pre A light buckets were a bit lower but not positive about that.

I think it was the turn signals that migrated.

Head light Bucket position did NOT change through the pre A and A models. All at the same height and position. Turn signals did change numerous times. '50-51 front signal lights were in the same horizontal position just inboard of the headlights. 1953 front signal lights moved to directly under the headlight, still in the same horizontal position. 1954 is the same position for the front signal lights but horn grille was added.
1955 front signal lights and horn grille moved u[p horizontally about 10 mm but still directly under the headlights. there is not definite cut off dates as to when changes were made, all changes were made on the run.
All headlight buckets dimensions were the same from pre A to mid/end production of 1989 for the 911. There are some differences in some stampings of the headlight bucket which can be seen from the inside, some holes were different, and some brackets were added and deleted through out the 911 years. Yes VW headlight buckets can be used because of the dimensions, but the stampings are not 100% correct

Hmm, I was under the impression that the headlight bucket was slightly lower on the Pre As
If this is not the case, then I will put it down to poor workmanship on my speedster then
