New COA, not CTC
Looks like moving forward you will have to have your car inspected by a local dealer to insure it's matching numbers. Looking more like Ferrari every day.

Re: New COA, not CTC
It's also another opportunity to up-price the Certificate which equals another profit point for the provider.

The question will be if the poeple inspecting a 356 are knowledgeable enough. Will the dealer have access to the Kardex?

Mike, if the inspector is a dealer, it's pretty certain near any of us are more familiar with 356s than they are.Mike Wilson wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2019 11:16 am The question will be if the poeple inspecting a 356 are knowledgeable enough. Will the dealer have access to the Kardex?

Looks like just another profit center. An add on to the C.O.A cost. Porsche or a designee will now inspect your car. Give you an evaluation of needs. Interesting they now also have classic restoration services. Looks like a pretty good in house marketing strategy.

There are now 10 US Porsche Classic designated dealers. Who will be the first 356 owner to drive into one of those dealers and get a CTC inspection and report. Let us know how it works out!

All that is about to change, I checked with a friend who runs a dealership in FL, this was his response.Brad Ripley wrote: ↑Fri Mar 15, 2019 1:00 am There are now 10 US Porsche Classic designated dealers. "This is something that Porsche will be rolling out fully and when they do, we will be an authorized location. In the mean time we have been sending our technicians to heavy air cooled and classic training all over the country in preparation for this. At the moment though, we cannot perform this. But like I said, that will change as soon as the program is fully rolled out to the dealers."
Brave New World of Porsche.

So where all over the country do they get "air cooled and classic" training? Independent specialist shops?

Re: New COA, not CTC
Opening a can of worms. Imagine the surprise when a 25 year old tech opens the lid and sees set of Dellortos or Webers when he has been trained on Zeniths and Solex and of course I wonder how he will manage without the other myriad of personal mechanical changes wrought by many owners that he was not trained on. Maybe I am being too cynical and todays techs can cope with high tech cars and low tech cars but my experience has not been too good with the younger techs except for very few who were real gear heads and do it for fun and not for a living.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Re: New COA, not CTC
Interesting since our local dealer, like many I'm sure, will no longer service air cooled Porsches. I'd bet the 'eligible authorized Porsche dealer ' list that could do the certification will be a very small one. Instead of grabbing more money for a COA, I think PCNA would probably be more interested in doing away with the service all together. This limits their liability when they have little control yet could, the way it's done now, certify originality of a fraudulent car. It's a CYA policy for COAs.

Re: New COA, not CTC
The PPS that has replaced the CoA more directly is supposed to replace the engine & transmission serial #'s with type #'s only. However, one that was recently sent to me had both serial #'s. My service for the Kardex has been quite busy this year compared to last. I am just praying that my source is able to continue for many more years. We are all getting older, and when my source is gone I think we will be very much out of luck.

Re: New COA, not CTC
Back in the '80's I worked with the automotive conusultants from Arthur D. Little, in Cambridge MA. Porsche was a client and spent a lot of time studying how the cult of the classic Porsche, helped the brand sell new cars. At that time, our idea, which was accepted by Porsche, is that every single part, of every car that Porsche ever made, would be available at a Porsche dealer. I have seen a lot of NOS parts tags on 356 parts dated in the early '80's so I think they at least did exactly that for a period of time. Porsche knows that the success of "classic" Porsches can be both a profit centre, and a very cost effective branding statement. I expect they will do a good job with this, as they have with other initiatives.

Now they don't want a part sitting on their shelf longer than a month. How does THAT work when they are restoring a 356 or early 911 or 912?
