Re:3/59; Hoping to graduate from HS in June and drag-racing at Westhampton on weekends in my nosed and decked, raked and pinstriped 2-door, flat head '50 Mercury which had the biggest back seat you can imagine. Well used at the Sunrise drive-in and allowed me to figure out why/how girls were different. First saw a Porsche ~4 years earlier and knew I'd have one some day.

Hoping to graduate, I can relate!
Girls are even better than Porsches, especially the one I have been married to for 40 years.

I was always denied, so much later bought all of the "stuff" I dreamed about in the catalogsGraham Kerr wrote:Lionel Trains, wow! When I was a kid somehow I got hold of a Lionel catalogue. The only trainset I had was a Hornby Dublo with one engine and two coaches, but Lionel were BIG and you could get a Caboose and an engine with a Cow Catcher. This was wild stuff to a spotty kid. I devoured that catalogue, then I grew up and found Porsches, oh well, can't have it all.

February of '59, walking out of a record store after just hearing that Buddy Holly had died.
July '59, moving from my small West Texas town to Lubbock, Tx., home of Buddy Holly.
October '59, driving a '31 Chevy with a sign on the rear advertising a soon to be open walmart type store. I didn't yet have a license, but the man who hired me never asked. Girls...the Chevy had curtains on the rear windows...liked that car.
Don't recall seeing a 356 until 1975 when I bought a '56 coupe with all the parts in boxes. Didn't drive one( the '56) until over a year later.

Driving a '51 Chevy Bel Air 2 door hardtop to CA fully equipped with 2 canvas water bags hanging from front bumper guards, dual "smitty mufflers, spinner hubcaps, and a bug deflector mounted on the hood ornament. Before Interstate 80. Lost a timing gear in Lovelock, Nevada. Two days late for promised apprentice cabinet making job in Santa Clara, CA. Beat the heck out of laying railroad tracks for Union Pacific.

I was 10, living in Great Shelford, England, just outside of Cambridge.
Trying to get rides in one of my Dads friends cars.
One was a 54 Aston Martin DB4 that, I think, actually raced at Le Mans, the other was a 56 Carrera Speedster.
Stinky, Smokey, Greasy, and LOUD !! I loved it

Re: Where were you in Mar '59
in '59 I was on my second new (European) car after my 4CV. A Saab 93B, one of the best cars I've owned. I was 19, had two kids, and worked a second job at night, just to make my $39 car payment. At near 80, I'm just as crazy. ……………….Jim.
