Where were you in Mar '59

#1 Post by Graham Kerr »

I'm not too sure if this post should go in this section but fairly soon I'll be getting rid of my 356 motor. It's barely done 300 miles since been fully rebuilt by Gantspeed in Boston UK. It's on twin Webers and goes very well indeed. The important thing is the number which is 72966 and I believe it first breathed life in March 1959. It will be a month or so until it becomes available but if any member needs this particular powerplant it is available.

you spoiled brat! We had five I was the oldest the best we could do on my Dad's Equifax salary was a Buick lesabre in 1960 and a 60 vw bug my Grandmother gave my parents for their 10th wedding anniversary, but at least that bug is the reason why I love 356s so much. Eight years old and a car my size!

I was 16 and learning to fly in a Slingsby T21 glider out of RAF St Athan in South Wales. I was an RAF air cadet and all I wanted to do was to fly. I flew solo 3 years before I drove solo.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

(gas) Welding up the frame for my first (illegal) mini-bike. Used a Cushman flathead (who made those?) with a jack-shaft step-down, but wasn't skilled enough on the lathe to make the sliders work on the front suspension; the surface finish was too rough. I know now the material was wrong and the tool height was off. Hey, I've learned something.
Girls? A fantasy...

Lionel Trains, wow! When I was a kid somehow I got hold of a Lionel catalogue. The only trainset I had was a Hornby Dublo with one engine and two coaches, but Lionel were BIG and you could get a Caboose and an engine with a Cow Catcher. This was wild stuff to a spotty kid. I devoured that catalogue, then I grew up and found Porsches, oh well, can't have it all.
