Need Tachometer guage face identified etc.

#1 Post by Steve Raucher »

My electronic tachometer made in 5/64 6 volt just had new glass and bezel installed at Palo Alto Speedometer. Owner pointed out several things not correct on back and that front face should read X1000 not X100.
Emailed Brett Johnson back and forth and he said single digit tachs should read X1000. Two digit tachs would read X100.
Can anyone identify what model car this tach would have come out of and is it a defect the way it reads X100?
I saw a '63 Carrera tach on the Samba that looked similar but the hi low beam lights were in different positions.
Thank you,
Steve

It looks like a Electric C Carrera tach to me. It would be just like your Dad to have put that in the Speedster.

Thank you Jim.
If anyone would know it would be you.
It is ironic the the stoutest 356 the Carrera, would max out at 600 or 700 RPM LOL!
Wonder why they did not print the extra zero to read X1000?
Happy holidays,
Steve

Tach from my '65 356SC. (Jim knows this car well.) Original to the car. Electric, 6V, dated 6/64. When I took it out it didn't look like it had ever been out before. Palo Alto Speedo says it had never been apart until they dissembled it for repair and cleaning. Other than possibly a 904 tach, I'm not aware of any 356 tach that says "x1000". The ones I've seen say "x100".

Nice picture! Your picture of your tach is from your 356SC with a 6200 red line. Here is a picture of the electric tach from my lowly 356C
NOTE: My tach doesn't even go 6200!

Suspect face doesn't appear to have "VDO" on it anywhere either.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Actually because of flash glare, VDO is on the bottom.
Anyone care a guess as to why it reads X100 RPM and not X1000?
Cheers,
Steve

50x100=5,000, 50x1000=50,000 I do not think there is a Porsche that revs to 50,000

Steve, the center piece of your face does not go with the outer part. Now your redline is at 620 rpm (6.2 x100), overrevving at idle, can't be fun to drive. :)

Whoever restored it should fix it. I'm on board with Jim, that is an electric Carrera 2 tach but it is now a confused gauge.

Here's my mechanical C2 tach for comparison, it has not been opened and reads x1000 (6200 redline, yeah baby!).

I believe the check lights moved down with the introduction of the electric tach, to make room for the additional contacts in the gauge. Look at the back of yours to verify it is electric.

As far as I know, this is the ONLY gauge ever used in a 356 that used a x1000 factor. A and B carreras had x100 and a double digit scale (10, 20, 30 etc) just like all push rod 356

Well Jules,
Actually this car is amazing to drive and so much fun. Being that the this electronic tach is not original to this car, I doubt at this point in time I will change it as it works just fine. Been in this car at least 27 years. Guess I could source a new correct face dial from Palo Alto Speedo or ?? if that lack of extra 0 really bugs me but it does not.
Still seeking the answer from the plebs that made this dial face the way it is............

Steve, i hope you did not take my "can't be fun to drive' comment as serious.

You asked "Can anyone identify what model car this tach would have come out of and is it a defect the way it reads X100?".

That was answered I believe? I am sure PAS or NHS can fix it for you, but I am confident the addition of a '0' won't change the smile on your face when you drive the car. :)

I thought Carrera 2s were 12 volt . All the electric tachs I have seen do not have the multiple green lines showing the rpm range that is good for your engine . I wish I had the Carrera 2 face put on my tach when I upgraded my engine .
