Keys for a '57 Speedster?

#1 Post by Dan Macdonald »

Guys,
Did a '57 Speedster come with one key that fit both the ignition and the doors? Or was there a key for each?
The locks on my doors do not accept (slide in) the key that fits my ignition. A different type altogether.
If it supposed to be different, what type blank is it?

Also did the original ignition key have the "PORSCHE" name on it? Mine does not. Mine has, what I think is, the Bosch logo on it.

The key for your 57 speedster door could be one of two key blanks what is the chassis number or when was your car built? The ignition switch should be a Bosch key as you state. The two choices for the door key are either a 610 blank or a D4 blank. What kind of door handles do you have? There are several previous posts on door handles and door handles keys....
The early style door handle was used until about May of 57 then the 57 only handles was probably used from about May through September, then the switch to the newer style handle with the rounded edge starting probably in August.

if your speedster is 82954 then it is a 56 model year car that was sold or registered in 57 the car probably has a 57 title. If this is the case then you need the earlier style square door handle and related key blank.

Rick,
Thanks for the great information.
However my Speedster, 82954, was not a 1956 car. According to both the Kardex and the COA the Delivery Date is 4 February, 1957.
I’ll compare my door locks with your photos this weekend.
Thanks again.

Hi Rick,
Here are some photos of the Speedster keys and door lock. Note that the door handle is "Square" ended which seems correct for an early '57 car.
Can you tell me the correct key blank and if the ignition key is original as supplied when the car was new?
Thanks!

Dan, Your key looks identical to mine that I received when I purchased 83946 in 1966. Mine has a little more wear than yours shows. Mine still has the original T1 ignition switch which they must have installed in Speedsters until they were gone. My optional coupe seats were also T1s as is the pattern of my rear seat and its optional back rest. Any optional parts that were left from cab and coupe production model changes went into those Speedsters when such options were requested. KTF, Bill

Don, My door locks are correct for a T2 in that they are the handles with the rounded corners that Rick shows above. Your photo shows a strange tumbler unit so it may be hard to determine the key blank needed for a new key, My door locks look just like Rick's photos. The change to the later style started with 83791 which by Dr. B. Johnson was the first T2 Speedster. My door key number is listed as K120 but I have change them to get new chrome. I never have used the locks; there is just no point with sliding side curtains. KTF

Guys,
I just reviewed my 57 Speedster's Kardex and the door lock ("Schlussel-Nr.") is listed as "7560". Can that key number also indicate the type of key blank used?

Dan, You must have a unique set of door locks from the factory. Mine is an S120 on the KARDEX. We can hope that someone else out there has a plain four digit number on their KARDEX. Based on your key number there must be another option for door lock key tumbler sets. KTF.

Dan,
A 7560 key code is associated with the pre A style door handle. The proper key is shown above with the green back ground. There are also several after market keys that are "equivalent" replacement blanks. Some of the replacement blanks have slightly different offsets. This style of key and handle was used until about June of 57. The 7000 series pre A key codes were used from about September 56 to February of 57. The 7000 series codes are mostly the thin style pre A lock cylinders. See attached images. The door handles you show are consistent, your images show the thin pre A lock cylinders but the keys you show are not the proper key blanks. Image 7905 above shows some of the available options or equivalent key blanks. Tony Euganeo has the last source of original style key blanks.

Rick,
Great info!!
My Speedster was delivered in February 1957. That fits right in with your analysis.
Thanks so much!

Rick,
How do we get in touch with Tony Euganeo these days?
Seems like he kinda fell off the map.

Dan, Tony has been harder to get a hold of lately but if you are persistent he does answer his phone if he is available.

I always wondered why my ignition key never fit the door locks on my car. This discussion has helped me better understand the subject. Thanks to all. 1957 certainly was an interesting year. Some early stuff. Some later stuff. As can be seen, the door handles are square, but the lock barrels are flat. I think my car may qualify to be classified as T 1.5..... somewhere in the middle. The following is what I have to contribute.

Chassis: 83498
Kardex date: June 25, 1957
Kardex Ignition switch: FXXX (still with the car)
Kardex door handles : 5 digit number (still with the car)

great discussion. thanks for all the input.
question: i just had a set of pre-A door handle receivers keyed (Zim's)
reassembling them to the handles it appears that they are both from the same side.
so... should they be left hand & right hand ?

as a note, 84102 (November '57) got a Bosch F1XX ignition switch & K1XX door locks.

TIA
