Luggage Rack Hole Plugs

#1 Post by Jim Kellogg »

All,
If you did not have a luggage rack, the attachment holes were plugged with plastic plugs. The originals had serrated edges, reproductions do not. We evaluated a beautifu 356 at Rennsport and the only proplem we saw was repro luggage rack hole plugs. We found four for the owner and discovered there were three different sizes. Concouurs judges, which size went with which model and year?

Jim,
Here are pics of two types of plugs.
I don’t know for sure....
But I’ve heard that some came with paint on them from the factory.
It would be nice if someone could verify if this was the result of a later respray.
Hope this helps.j

I think Roy Lock (R.I.P.) may have written an article on these plugs.

I would venture a guess that the plugs were not painted at the factory. Post-assembly, if a rack wasn't ordered, the plugs would have been inserted.

However, you know my mantra, "Porsche...consistently inconsistent..."

Here is the “B” parts manual.
It shows the larger plug with a stepped hole .
I think it might be safe to say these larger plugs (with a hole) went with the B (or later) cars.

On the Porsche PET web site they unite the parts for the B and C models.
Below is illustration #803-00 page 241.
It shows the plug as part # 66
Part number# 644 025 673 00

Corroboration that the stepped holed larger plug is most likely utilized for both the B and C models.

I scoured the PET A parts katalog.pdf.
I could not find the plug...
It does not mean anything other than I couldn’t find it.
I'm disappointed this part (A model) did not show up as it did with the same B/C illustration.
Anyway here is 1959 A model PET illustration 803-00 (hood/deck lid and associated hardware)
Page 242

You can see the rubber cushion deck lid etc., but no luggage rack plug.
Go figure?

My champagne yellow coupe from July 1965 had the smaller opaque nylon plugs. When I went to install a luggage rack and I may have been the first to do it on that car, they did have paint on them and the car had had one respray. At the same time, I seem to remember minor paint spray inside the threads indicating that the lid was factory painted prior to the plugs being installed. So I can't verify whether the paint on the plugs was factory-applied or not, but the plugs were definitely the small version with serrated edges and without center holes.

I've got some that I think were original on my 1959A. I'll run up to the garage this morning and shoot a picture.

I recall some 50+/- years ago they were painted and the paint tended to peel or flake off in our mile high sun.
They would have been installed before painting to keep the threads clear.

Several years ago Roy Lock (RIP) described the luggage rack plugs that were placed on at least in this case B models. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2309&hilit=Luggage+plugs#p9615

They appeared not to be painted however the sun could have caused the tops to peel.

I recall ordering the plugs http://www.stoddard.com/64470300200-nla.html but they did not fit they were too small. They were not serrated but smooth. They actually were the same size as my 911 bumper plugs.

The ones James pictured I believe are the correct ones. Whether they were painting at the factory I don’t know. I do know that no supplier carries a plug that fits. Or at least I was never able to source them.

I also have the ones like James has posted. I've found them on eBay and old deck lids. Some were painted, others not. The theory they were painted with the deck lids to kep the threads clear sounds logical but I don't know if Porsche worried about that with other threaded locations. Perhaps any owners with unrestored cars that never had a rack installed can weigh in.

Oh the energy we put into the minutia! Ha!

Ok everybody - then what plugs if any fit into the extra holes in the rack it's self. These extras are for when the rack is used on various models A B C ( twin or single grill ). Would I be correct to say these plug would be taken out of the engine lid and fitted to these holes.

Scott,
Not really clear what holes in the luggage rack you are speaking of.

So...these plugs theoretically protect these threaded holes in the engine lid. When the luggage rack is installed they are removed and stowed away. When the rack comes off the plugs go back in the threaded holes.

I hope this makes sense.

The "real" plugs are a minutia detail for those chasing parts that don't exist.
