Another Possible Scam

#1 Post by Peter Silten »

There is an ad for a 62 notchback that just showed up on the Registry. The asking price is 40k:

Here is the same car on TheSamba for 75k OBO:

Has the bona fide owner been notified that someone is trying to scam people?

I sent a note to the seller on TheSamba to let him know.

The car on the Samba is the one I sold to Matt Abrams a few years ago. My photos. Matt’s phone is on the ad and that’s his voicemail. The only correction is that the engine was done by Tim Baridelli (sp?) not Zim. I left a message that effect. Don’t have any knowledge of the car since I sold it. Was a great car when he bought it. I have a spreadsheet with service history until I sold it.

How about this clean C ? $40,000

https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto ... 71652.html

1964 Porsche 356C Reutter Coupe with factory electric sunroof and corduroy inserts on seats. Beautiful in and out. Engine is built for performance and runs well. Owned for the past 10 years. Beautiful driver-level car that can be easily upgraded with some work underneath. Cosmetically it needs very little. Runs and drives well. Titled as a 1965 but month of production indicates it's a 1964 model. Clear title in hand

Sure, but you won't see them, any real ad will last about 16 minutes, and be taken down after being bought by Gullwing. I was there once and he had three Indian ladies sitting at computers scanning every craigslist, every forum, everything.
So if you see an ad that looks like a deal and it's been up for one than a day, it's a scam. I haven't bought a car off craigslist in almost 10 years.

A number of Porsches on Bring A Trailer (Bat) haven't done well on the "sniff" test lately. The red "C" cab. being auctioned now with the 912 timing cover and an engine number that matches the COA is a good example!

That is a good one, Tim, and a good gotcha! You really have to look close at these cars. Some are fraudulently misrepresented and others just by sheer ignorance but this one with a stamped 912 timing cover...well...draw your own conclusions.

There are several things that the seller isn't mentioning on the C Cab. The engine restamp is obvious, but it looks like it didn't have that engine when the person wrote the notes on the Kardex. He wrote on the Kardex that the transaxle number matched, but didn't say that about the engine. I also wonder what caused the hood to be changed. It has a replacement hood because there are no line-up holes drilled through it on either side. Probably done long ago when new hoods were still available. Was it simply kinked or the result of a significant front impact. Does it look like rust holes in the pan next to the longitudinal to anyone else?

Adam is so right about "any real ad will last about 16 minutes".

Two weeks ago I put up a Ford F150 on New Hampshire Craig's and within a half hour I got this response from a Dorothy Ford, hows that for an original name.
Do you still have it for sale? If you do kindly text me on 805323**** and also text the final asking price.

Who the hell is Matt Floyd? Joined yesterday, has two stupidly low-priced tubs listed right now, INCLUDING the aforementioned hardtop!
