5:19.546. At the ring today

#1 Post by John Brooks »

A 919 just turned a 5:19.546 at Nürburgring Nordschleif. Geeez that's quick, breaking the old record set by the 956 35 years ago. For the few people lucky enough to to spend 15-20 minutes putting around the track in a 356, this is just a crazy time. But no FIA rules to limit the car now, the car really flys.

Average speed of 145.3. That is mind blowing.

The amount of time to do it in a 356 is amusing by comparison. I have often wondered (secretly) if a new Ford focus rental car could equal an early 911 lap time. Not sure if I want to know, as I am not a Ford lover.

Another gear or a slight change in ratios would have improved the time

He was bouncing off the Rev. Limiter for the best part of 75% of the Final Straight

Every car has a top speed. 369 kph is 229 mph. My bet is that the gear ratios were chosen carefully, to achieve maxumum speed at redline in 7th gear. Notice that the car didn't stay at 369 (its peak) for the whole straight. It was horsepower limited, not redline limited.

Since we are expressing the time to 3 decimal points, it was 5:19.546

The only way I could watch that video was with the sound off....and that was thrilling enough. Whew!

I saw that too. It was up to topspeed pretty quickly. Maybe a slightly longer top gear would of got a few secs.

Still would put money on a Mercedes F1 car going a lot quicker. The problem is that the F1 teams don't have time to develop a special Ring aero kit and setup. They are still trying to win a championship!

Mike
A couple of years ago they tried a modified suspension on an F1 car to do some demonstration laps around the old Nurburgring circuit. It did not work, the old circuit is far too variable for a modern F1 car.
Having said that the Porsche 919 Evo broke the F1 record at Spa in March.....
With warm weather you can only imagine how much quicker they could have gone!!
And what can we say about Mercedes after last weekends Austrian GP? stratergy mistakes and two failed cars.........
Red Bull wins at home, good on yer Max!!!
