356 AT2 tray under battery? Somebody must know..

#1 Post by John Lindstrom »

1952-56 pre-A / AT1 had a wooden “Tray” under it’s 6v lead acid battery. What material was under the AT2’s battery form 1957 on? Mine appears to have its original felt/tar strips. Is this original to these cars?

Hi, John:

I'll take a stab at it. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will offer the correct answer.

In the A parts manual, group 8, page 68 c, it shows the sound deadening for the trunk and engine bay. In the trunk, nothing is shown in the floor where the battery sits. There is sound deadening shown on the verticle walls of the battery area.

On later cars, there are sound deadening strips under the battery until a certain point where there was a plastic mat. Not sure when that started, maybe later T-6 B's or just the C models. I'll check my other parts manuals.

In thr B parts manual, two pieces of sound deadening are shown that go under the battery.
In the B supplenent, the same two pieces are shown.
In the C manual, it says the parts are the same as in the B manual. However, I know a plastic mat was introduced at some point. Probably a supplemental for this change.

John, sorry it took a while before I had a chance to pull the battery out, looks like I need to clean battery floor anyway. It's the original box with the two tar strips, late 59, like you mentioned on yours. Years ago I made a masonite rectangle and have had that as a spacer under the battery, thinking it might help keep any moisture from being trapped under the battery.

Steve mine looks like yours, but yours is slightly better than mine. From now on I’m not keeping the battery in the car, I’ll leave it on the shelf. Thanks guys and happy Father’s Day!
