1960 356B Roadster project on Ebay

#1 Post by Doug Arnao »

Hi all, new here. I'm very interested in doing a B roadster project and as you know, complete and matching numbers projects are rare to find. This ones been on ebay for week or so. I spoke to the seller, Kurt, today and he seems to be a very upfront honest guy. He purchased this along with a 52' coupe from the second owner in the south east, who owned it since 1962. The damage to the nose happened in transport in route to him, btw!
Anyways, opinions from all you knowledgable members are appreciated on what you see good and bad there. The fact it needs a full resto is a given. I have complete facilities to do it all so thats not a problem. :)
Oh, and the original color is Heron Gray, no Stone Gray. Apparently the COA is wrong and says he's having it corrected?

As a point of reference, the 2018 Sports Car Market price guide puts the median price of a '60 Roadster at $168K, equal to where Hagerty Insurance prices a #2 car in Excellent condition. Hagerty also prices a #3 car in Good condition at $102K, pretty much what your project is selling at. Given the extent of the restoration, can you get the car into a reasonable condition and value (whatever you consider it to be) without going too far down the rabbit hole with money (and hours) spent? More specifically, can you make a #2 car out of it for $63K? Seems like a real challenge.

Thanks. Hours don't bother me one bit. Only money. Anyways, i worked a reasonable deal with the seller today at much less than the advertised price. He was more eager to sell than i would have guessed, and bought it. The fun begins soon. Its complete, its a roadster, its matching. When are complete projects like this ever available is how i looked at it. Gotta buy it when you see it sometimes. I can definitely make a #2 car out of it for 60k or less. Thanks for the input Mark!

I have a question, once the car is in your possession.

A little inspiration, my car is going into paint soon.

Also, you can bring it to the next Roadster roundup when it's done. Congrats!

I do almost 100% of the work myself yes. Here's my last project google photo's album if anyone's intersted. A 1962 VW 15-window deluxe bus with a bit of reso-mod to it. The Roadster will be dead stock , however. This was probably 3000 hours work. Yikes.

It sure looks like you can handle the Roadster without a problem.

I got it and am pretty deep into it. Here's a link to a google photos album with about 500 pics of the project to date. Any questions just shout.
