Remember FX drag cars?

#1 Post by Ron LaDow »

Dunno how many remember Factory Experimental drag cars; early '60s. Cliff, I think you were 'involved' in one. A noted bookie had a Ford at Tri-State Raceway where I ran the Triumph (and lied about the ET).
Fiberglass front ends, tube headers, 'delete' options left and right to get the weight down, C/Rs living only on Sunoco's best! Right from the factories; head for the dealer and sign here.
Well, they got nothing on THIS:
"More cool air, supplied courtesy of the largest cool-air induction system and the only air-conditioner-powered charge-air cooler fitted to a production car, help to drop intake temps by more than 45 degrees Fahrenheit."
Yep, they run the intake air through the AC! And that's just the start; the seats other than the driver's seat are options!

I lied about getting into the 12s, but this thing is supposedly in the mid 9's on a prepared strip. The initial NHRA Nats in Indy, '61, Sneaky Pete Robinson won Top Eliminator in a AA/D at 8.86.

I remember A/FX cars VERY well.
Spent most of my teen years at Lions on friday nites and OCIR on Wed. nites
A/FX were running before OCIR was open, but ran at Lions alot.
Hubert Platt, Malcolm Durham, Dougs Headers, etc.
Then came the fiberglass bodied cars.
I worked at Don Burns VW when the "Durachrome Bug" ran. We used to go out together as a team to OCIR. I ran a J/G then a K/G bug, he ran the funny car.
Big fun back then.
Got out of drag racing and went solo and road racing with Allen Johnson with the B/S 911S then the 910.

There is a booming market in A/FX and B/FX replicas, as well as gassers, in SoCal. A friend of mine has been making them to order, and he’s got quite a business going.

Love'em. The glory days of American drag racing. Slightly before my time, but these always appealed to me the most. I need a v8 in my life again, so installing a 273 commando in my 66 Dodge van. It looks the part with Torqthust D's on it now, but missing that v8!
