Re: Vredstein Sprint Classic 185/70/15 on 5.5 wheel - any pi
So it looks like the Silver cab has the 185's? Looks like a nice fit, thanks for the pics. I am being extra careful with tire size/selection, since I have had a string of 'not quite what I was looking for' tire purchases.
I like the look of the 205's since they have the additional center rib, but obviously too big for our cars.
Thanks Brad, my mistake. I thought they were all Sprints. I checked out Longstone and they have a great selection of vintage tires, but some quite expensive . The Vredsteins seem like a pretty good value for like 140 each. If money was no object I would probably go for the Dunlops.
'EDIT' I do see a Vredstein sprint classic in 185 70 15, the tread pattern is different from the classic (?). These are what I was referring to:
https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DCh ... CDU&adurl=
And another 'EDIT' - I think they just vary in appearance depending on size. I see two very different looking Vredsteins advertised as 185/70/15, maybe not photos of actual tire size. Anyway, I think I will be buying some of these but will confirm it is what I think it is. Glad I can throw the (nearly new) toyo's on the Jetta!
And yet another 'EDIT' - Tire Rack mentions the cold storage thing:
"Note: Tires exposed to temperatures of 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or lower must be permitted to gradually return to temperatures of at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) for at least 24 hours before they are flexed in any manner, such as by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels, or using them to support, roll or drive a vehicle.
Flexing of the specialized rubber compounds used in Grand Touring Summer tires during cold-weather use can result in irreversible compound cracking. While compound cracking is not a warrantable condition because it occurs as the result of improper use or storage, tires exhibiting compound cracking must be replaced."
Seems weird, not sure I want to deal with that..
Thanks,
Mark

it's a S90, that is why it needs fat tires

Mark: I'm running Vredsteins on my '65 and '55 near Boston, and am quite happy. My guess is that you won't be driving on days under 20 degrees, and on warmer days the tires will most certainly have warmed up for the required period of time before you're ready to drive. It's never been an issue for me and it's over ten years. Tom

Re: Vredstein Sprint Classic 185/70/15 on 5.5 wheel - any pi
Thanks for the replies.
I did check the tire sticky and there are no pics of this seemingly popular tire size.
I do not anticipate driving it in extreme cold, but do store it cold. I have not had any problems storing vehicles cold with tires on, but best to just remove them and install the original wheels/old tires for winter storage.
Looks like the 185/70's are what I am after. I like a bigger tire and slightly lower pressure for some of the rough roads around here. I have 185/65's on it now and there is plenty of room.

Do the 185X70X15 tyres on a steel 5.5 inch spare wheel, fit under the hood?

If you mean in the front trunk, no. Carry a regular size as the spare, or even better get a run-flat spare (space saver) from a recycler.

Just received Michelin XZX 165SR from Jegs Performance FREE shipping $126 with less than 7mo date code. Your results may vary. Michelin's were the 'cool ' tire back then and still are for me today. Daryl SoCal 63 super 90

Tires for 65 C
I need to replace my 196/65/15 Bridgestone Potenza's G009 and am looking for a good replacement tire since Bridgestone does not make these anymore. These are 11 years old and have been good tires. any suggestions? I do not drive the car more than 1500 miles per year and no track but spirited driving

Re: Tires for 65 C
How about 175 x 65x 15 Sumitomo summer tires. I just bought some for my 64 coupe after buying a set of Sumitomo tires for my boxster. For the price they are excellent, though as they are summer tires not suitable for driving in temps below 50*f without getting them warm first and probably never to be driven in freezing temps. They are slightly smaller diameter than the original 165 x 15 but slightly wider so handling is going to be better but revs will be up a little. Specs show 796 revs per mile for the 165 x 80 and 844 for the 175 x 65. Amazon has them for free shipping then you have to find someone to install them.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Re: Tires for 65 C
My choice is Vredestein. I started with them back in the '70's and have stayed with them ever since. I have 185/70 x 15 with 51/2 wheels. They are great on the Tail of The Dragon (see avatar) for your "spirited driving" as well as on those rainy days getting there.
