Porsche Trivia

#1 Post by Jim Beam »

Originally the Magnum PI television series called for the use of a red Porsche 911. Problem was that Tom Selleck was too tall to fit so the red Ferrari was substituted. Way too much time on my hands. Good Porsche weekend all.

Interesting. I'll driven an early '80s 308 and being 6' 1" I found it difficult to sit in without removing the top. Perhaps the 911 they were considering was a coupe, then I'd understand.

What is the purpose of the duckbill screwdriver in 63B toolkit and other years?

If it's the screwdriver I'm thinking you mean it fits in a notch of the fan pulley to hold it while you tighten the nut.

Also I have an '82 911 coupe and I'm 6' and never had a headroom problem in it. I can't imagine a 308 having more room. I suspect the director or producer wanted a toy to play with when they weren't shooting. :D

Isn't there less headroom in a sunroof coupe?

Jim,

That is interesting to hear. Nearly in all cases 911's have more interior room than any (2 door) Ferrari. That's one of the reasons you see most older Ferraris with super low mileage whilst their Porsche counterpart has been driven much more--Porsche cars are comfortable to drive, Ferraris not as much.. Another reason is $6,000 Ferrari scheduled maintenance services

Mike: Yes, there is less headroom in a sunroof car by about 2" which is what's taken up by the sunroof assembly.

My 82 911 has the sunroof and like I said I never noticed a problem with head room.
Maybe one of the differences with the Ferrari is the "italian" driver ergonomics, i.e. long arms, short legs which would force you to sit more reclined than in a Porsche. That said, I do love the sounds an Italian car makes (especially the 12 cyl ones). Wish I had a friend that has one that would let me drive it for a weekend just to get over that to avoid the mistake of actually buying one.

That's exactly what will do it for you. The first time I drove one was on a 356 Motor Cities Gruppe fall tour in northern Michigan. After a stop a friend who had just sold his Speedster asked if we could trade cars on the next leg. I jumped into his (Magnum PI) Ferrari and he took my C coupe. After 20 minutes of the hour long jaunt I was all done. Too cramped, too noisy for a one hour drive. The next time I drove one (a newer model) it was the same thing, after about 20 minutes I was ready to get out of it.

Are they beautiful to look at and to listen to? Absolutely, just not for me to own one.

Also, I'm italian and my proportions are not as you describe

I thought you were Basque  , so maybe from a little further north than the Alfa designers (Think Tazio Nuvolari). All the Alfas I ever drove had that characteristic. Fortunately my Milano had an adjustable steering wheel that helped a lot.
Porsches definitely more comfortable but I am curious about the new Giulias. Glad the dealers are all at least 30 miles away from me.

I get that a lot, but no, I am Italian. Grandparents immigrated in the early 1900's, father born in the North End of Boston. I suppose I should be more enamored with the Italian cars, but air cooled Porsches and VW's have always been my first love in cars.

By chance did you go to the big FOG get together a couple of weeks ago.? A good friend of mine named Tim Buko moved to New Smyrna Beach and attended the event in his silver B coupe. He sent pictures of the event which were spectacular and I am going to try to go next year.

I always loved both Alfas and Porsches but my first ride in a 1955 Speedster when I was in my early teens sealed the deal. although my heritage is 1/2 German 1/2 Swedish (not English as my name might imply) I do think there's a bit of Italian somewhere as I have a "Roman Toe" and Italian woman are very appealing to me :D (moth to the flame syndrome)
I was a member of FOG many years ago but let it lapse when I moved to DC to work. I do plan on rejoining once I relocate back to Gator Country (Gainesville). Seems they don't have many activities in S Florida so I haven't had much interest while I've been in Boca
