Porsche 356 production date?

#1 Post by Timothy A Fishburne »

I am trying to determine the correct year of my 356 Porsche. I purchased as a 1964 356C, Porsche COA Docs tells me its a 1962 356B. Vin# fromCOA, title and id tag are all the same number and indicate that it is a 64. It has a C mirror and C interior handle. The porsche has been repainted at least once, Possible COA made a mistake?

Also has paint code: 6401, which I believe is slate grey, possibly the car was originally red. Thank you!

Post the chassis # then we can tell you when it was made and what it is supposed to be. Also where are you USA or some other country/ The more information you can post the more information you will get back. Even a state helps if you need local help. You could be a few miles away from me and I would never know.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Yes, has disc brakes, I'll check on the chassis number, vin code says it's a 1964C.

Looks like you need a Kardex, then approach PCA for a new COA.

What do you find out when you put your chassis number (call it VIN) in here?

From a post a while back:

"Porsche factory documentation designated that cars built after VIN 130512 (Reutter), 219070 (Karmann) and 160751 (cabriolets) are classified as 1965 model year cars."

My COA includes a "Production Completion Date." "03/17/1961" Is that information trustworthy?

COA's are notoriously inaccurate. They do generate good money for PCNA though.

VIN and chassis number are the same thing for 356 cars. Don't C models have a plate in the front trunk with VIN? Isn't the VIN stamped into the metal of the chassis also?

CoA are notorious for inaccuracies. Get a hold of the Kardex, which is the source of information for the CoA.

There are many sources which tell what year a chassis number was made.

No. The COA uses the information on the Kardex for the date. The Kardex dates are Invoice date, and Sale date. These will always be later than the completion date. I do not have specific 356 info, but comparing COA/Kardex dates with Production book dates for early 911's indicates that a few weeks can separate the two.

California title issued in 1974 claims it's a 1964 coupe. Porsche COA, says 1962 B with a production date of 07/18/1962. Porsche 356 Registry says it's a 1963 model year, with a 1962 production date, chassis, T6 B. paint code 6401. The car also has disc brakes. I'll check the chassis number info.

Is it safe to post my vin# ?

Paint code is 6401, meaning it is a 1964 or 1965 color.

Post your VIN, but x out the last few digits. E.g. 130xxx
