Looking for a Cellete jig in Kentucky, Ohio area

#1 Post by David Jones »

I went off roading today in my 64C when avoiding a deer and hit a pothole and now my doors are out of alignment. I bent the right side track rod and completely trashed 2 wheels on that side. On my lift I can see where metal has buckled slightly just behind the top of the right beam support so it is going to need to go on a jig and be straightened.
Hence my question on who has a jig. That is likely where the car will go for repair.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

David,
I'd contact Bruce at Stoddard to see where their jig went.

Dave
The good news is you were out in your 356. Bad news is the deer. Up here in northern MI they say its best to hit the deer. Hard to say in your case. A real bummer. Hope you were not hurt, besides your feelings. Good luck finding a jig.

David,
Sorry to hear this news.
Bill Kemper recently completed a C cab for a fellow DSG member and the results were awesome.
Great guy and shop to work with.

David, sorry to hear of the damage. My Celette bench now resides at Bruce Baker's shop near Philadelphia. I have heard good things regarding Bill Kemper's work.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The appraiser is coming Monday so we shall see what the future holds. I hit so hard that the fuel tank lifted out of its position and I can see crinkled metal behind and above the right front beam support around the area of the top shock bolt. There is unquestionably movement of chassis and body. I went and looked today at the spot where I went off road and it appears I did not go more than 2 ft off the verge but I hit a concrete culvert that was at the head of a driveway parallel to the road. Probably 18" deep so the impact on the right front wheel was transmitted through the beam. Amazing that a 53 year old car could survive that much of an impact. A few pics attached for the vicarious among us. Just be glad it was not you. I have to be philosophical about it and accept the risk of driving fun roads where the deer also play.

David,
Given a hit of that severity, I'm just happy that you're in one piece.

Ron, I credit having 3 point inertia reel seat belts for some of that. If I had not been held in my seat I would probably have lost control. I also credit years of single seat race car driving with giving me the training to know not to try and pull it back on the road quickly which could have resulted in a roll over. I held it along the verge and eased it back on to the blacktop which was hard with two flat tires.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

David,
Very sorry to hear about your 356, but glad to know you are fine.

As the owner of the C Cabriolet that Peter Boettcher mentioned earlier in this thread, I highly recommend Bill Kemper.

I wonder if Dennis used it to restore his prewar Bentley?

I would quiz the shop a lot. Mostly the bench is used for getting a car right during extensive rust repairs. An expert at that may not know that much about straightening a bent structure, unless it is repaired by replacing every part that is bent. That requires taking the car way apart. The bench doesn't do the straightening, it just lets you know when it is correct. Without extreme disassembly your damage will be quite hard to completely repair.
