Dunkelgrau color

#1 Post by George Kehler »

Hey Guys !! Just got my Reutter Certificate and it is worth purchasing. Especially with my COA and Kardex that had no exterior/interior information. Looks like the exterior is Perlgrau (Pearl Grey) Reutter color #534. And my dash, door caps, and wheels (!) are Dunkelgrau Reutter color #532. Does anyone know a color code for this color ?? Looks like a darker grey per their sample on the Certificate though their Pearl Grey looks incorrect (too yellow). Is it unusual for the wheels to be the same color as the dash/doorcaps ?? Any help is appreciated !! George K

I seem to recall that a common dash color in '55 was a fairly dark gun-metal gray metallic, could that have been the dash color they are showing? I would think wheels would match the car not the dash, but who knows.

George,
That looks like the color I remember. As I said, it was a metallic gun metal gray. I painted a dash years ago in an attempt to match it and my notes indicate I used a mixture of 28 parts of a Chevrolet color, Dark Taupe (Dupont Lucite 5113L Taupe Metallic) and 2 parts of a Porsche silver (Dupont Lucite 36000L Silver). Unfortunately the year of Chevrolet is not visible but I did the painting in about 1974 so both colors would have been for vehicles prior to then.

Hi George,

Yeah, R532 was a common dash color. It was standard color of dash, door tops and wheels on the Pearl grey coupes of mid-1954 through 1955.

Don't confuse it with R543 Dunkelsilber, which was also a common dash, door top and wheel color. Dunkelsilber was dark metallic grey, and it was usually on Silver metallic cars from mid-1954 through 1955.

See period photo below of an early '56 European with light-colored bodywork color and darker wheels.

In 1954, Porsche experimented with two-color wheels on both coupes and cabs. There's a number of period photos (factory photos) that indicate this. See other photos below.

Here's a photo of R532 Dunkelgrau. Here it is paired with a red interior on a ~May 1954 Pearl grey coupe. As you can see, it is non-metallic.

And I should also mention that both these dash colors are different from the cars that were painted Graphite metallic R537 in 1954 and 1955. These cars generally had Graphite metallic dashes, door tops and wheels.

Thank you, Mr Davies, for your expert information. Looks like you should be on the payroll for the Factory with your vast, early knowledge !! Your last picture is what my car should look, though it looks somewhat busy with such colors. And the dark wheels contrasting with the pearl gray body .... Maybe the Reutter guys were throwing darts as to interior/exterior color combos !! GBK

Happy to help! Glad these Reutter spec sheets are helping.

The red interior combined with blue or grey was pretty common 1954 through 1957. Sometimes the red leatherette seats had grey corduroy inserts too.

Did your Reutter spec sheet give the upholstery numbers and manufacturers for yours? There are sample books out there, and there are existing cars to match paint from for many of these colors.

Hi George
The paint colour 'Dunkelgrau' is a wartime colour also known as 'Panzergrau' I had a large tin mixed here in the UK to paint the chassis of my 1944 Kubelwagen a few years ago.
Kubelwagen chassis.jpg
I matched my colour to the original paint on the Notek light on the front of the Kubel.
Kubelwagen finished.jpg
The RAL code is listed as (RAL 7021 Black Grey) but I have found that (RAL 7061 Anthracite Grey) is a better match to the original, it is slightly lighter/more blue.
Any good paint shop should be able to match RAL colours.

Hope that helps.
