rod bearings
Hello! I don't have a Pre A model but i need something from you guys. Do you know from were i can buy one rod bearing set for my car? I have a early A from december 55 and it is not the same as the late models. The difference is that the original bearings for the early 356A models had the tab on one side and for the later models they switched the tab to the other side.it's still 1 tab, only on the opposit side of the bearing shell. I don't want to adapt the con rods from the late A or B,C. Thank you.

Re: 356 AT1 rod bearings
Left-hand tab sets are getting rare but at least a couple of sets are on Ebay right now (1st's and a 2nd). Or, a Registry Forum member might have a set to offer.
If you insist on using these rods, you may want to send them out and get the tab slot machined into the right side so you can use easily available bearings.

Re: rod bearings
Look on Ebay or, as we said on the other forum in which you asked the same question, have your rods machined to take the later bearings. Or, even better, buy some late rods.

Re: 356 AT1 rod bearings
Having thrown two 502 rods through the top of an engine case in my past life, I wouldn't use them. I throw them away; I will not re-sell them.

Re: rod bearings
Another option is to get a set of later 502 rods that take the later bearings if he isn't going to use them in anger. they should almost be free in cost since as Vic notes they are wimpy and you save the added cost of bearings/tang mod.

Re: rod bearings
I don't think those are correct, 25/36hp VW rods are not the same size as 356 rods.

I have a long block in the garage with a 3" x 3" hole in the top.Vic Skirmants wrote:Having thrown two 502 rods through the top of an engine case in my past life, I wouldn't use them. I throw them away; I will not re-sell them.
You have to admit Vic, when you have a big hole in the block it makes it easy to diagnose.

Re: rod bearings
I have this same situation on the 56 1600 normal engine I am rebuilding.
Rod bearings I bought have the lock tab on the opposite side.
Has anybody located any with the lock tabs on the correct side for an early 356?
