Battery Box Floor

#1 Post by Steve Nau »

I am restoring a 56 Coupe body number 56536.
I picked up a new battery box floor at the Stoddard swap meet last weekend.
When I got home it didn't look quite right and then I noticed on their website that the part I got is for body number over around 10,000.
The only other one Stoddard has is for a pre-A.
Can anyone tell me the difference between the pre-A battery box floor, early A and later A floor?

Right. Item 7 is what I got but if you look at the fine print it only applies to A's built after body 10000 or so.
My body number is 56536. There must have been changes between Item #1 version and #7 which is what I would like to know.

Not familiar with the early A, but look at the battery compartment sidewalls. If they look like this, I would think you need the PreA floor.

Here is how mine looks. Pretty obvious why I need a new floor.

Steve,
T1 battery floor is different than the later A model. It doesn't have the central rib. I believe the only one making the proper panel are the Italian guys at Vintage toys. You can see the panels in their spare parts chapter of their web page.

This is the correct floor for early A model if it helps. No reinforcement rib on the center section.

thanks.. good picture.
did you have a tow hook on your car ??
I wonder why the suppliers like Resto design and stoddard all sell the version that I have ? and not the correct type ? they are usually very good about trying to make the products match.

No tow hooks that I'm aware on T1. About our suppliers, well is not easy to follow the chaotic changes on the PreA or early A era. Besides might be uneconomical to reproduce panel with low demand because of few units made. The supply chain is getting bigger by the minute mostly because the increase in value of early cars. That and the picky Porsche population due the trick at the end.
As i mention in my previous post I believe all suppliers but one are reproducing only the T2 version of the panel. However transition to T2 from T1 was gradual and I do not know the point when the battery panel was changed. By common sense must have been when they change also the nose from PreA model to T2, I believe at chassis 100.000. Who knows....
