Oil change and smoke

#1 Post by Scott Halperin »

I just changed the oil on my 356 I am noticing some smoke out the tail pipe that was not there before. I used Valvoline VR1 Racing 20W50. I am seeing around 50psi at about idle. Is it possible that this oil is generating too much oil pressure and causing some blow by? This was the only oil I could find with higher levels of zinc.

Thanks

50 psi at idle on a cold engine is not too high. What have you done to the engine recently besides oil change? What is the level on the dipstick?

I rebuilt the carbs. Might be running rich.

Scott,

Which carbs exist? Complete carb kits, or just gaskets? Were the float levels adjusted to specs?

Dick,

I have Weber 40s. They were rebuilt with complete kits. The float levels were set. I still need to adjust them. So far it seems that after sitting for awhile there is some smoke, but running for 15-20 minutes clears it up.
