356 Registry Home Page Pics

#1 Post by John Clarke » Wed May 17, 2017 8:53 am

Hi All
Very nice though the Pics or Photos on the 356 Registry Home Page are. Would it be possible to post a new set of pics up?
With possibly members being able to submit there own shots for inclusion in a monthly list maybe. Don't know much about Website management, but it would be good to see something else when we go to log in.
Kind regards
Jay

Hi John/ Members (my response is wide ranging)

While I do have the keys to the "under the hood of the website" I am not fully competent by any means. I am able to sort out basic issues that arise from time to time, but I have my limitations.. I have not looked at the photo rotation (yet) to see if it is something I can easily adjust. But, I am also going to say that a suggestion of members photos would provide for lots of photo opportunities, but also potentially generates more photos than we can insert in some cycle; resulting in folks saying why is my photo not in the header? Personally, I like the period photos.

Without getting on a soapbox I will say that our webmaster has served tirelessly for many years, is trying to lead a less stressful life and he deserves a break. To that end, while I respect(honestly) your suggestion to have greater photo rotation, I have greater concerns for the website and the club in general. This statement is not intended to be dismissive, it is simply a matter of priorities. We are hoping for someone to relieve Joe but there are legal /insurance coverage parameters that must be covered in finding a suitable replacement as most painfully exhibited over the past several years.

We have had several website upgrades in the past few years with the last moving everything to the cloud. From the point that I have been "in the know"( for @ 5 years) I believe the website is in the best situation it has ever been, probably since it's inception.

As I have stated in printed text, every member's point of view is legitimate and I strive to be receptive to all constructive suggestions/recommendations. Not only myself but every other Trustee is also available to receive/discuss your suggestions/concerns. Reading back through this before posting, I can see an appearance of implied contempt, I assure you it is unintended and a function of "e-mail, social media etc. translation"

If you want to take me to task, give me a call - my phone number is in the front of the magazine.

Thanks & KTF
Curt

I assume this thread was spun off of a larger thread. Where can I go to find the "implied contempt" etcetera?

Today your e-presence is the most important feature of promotion and communication of your business or organization. It is not just a means to show an address and phone number like it was 15 years ago. Visitors to websites expect content and not stale content. Yes, this is a "job" and requires time. If you have the right skills it is much easier and less time consuming than if you don't so maybe the people making decisions for the club are overwhelmed at the thought of it? Maybe a Trustee that lacks modern skills should step aside and encourage a qualified website professional, present or recently retired, to at least direct our website management as a Trustee. A more modern and professional website management approach has been suggested by newly elected Trustees in the past but they have been shot down by the long serving Trustees. If a knowledgable website pro would run for Trustee, emphasizing the application of that knowledge to our club, maybe the voters would choose to update the board?

We employ a professional printing outfit to produce our magazine, why don't we employ a professional IT company to run our website ?

Mike, sounds logical to me but this was suggested by at least one new Trustee some years ago. He was shot down.

My experience in business is that professional website services are not prohibitively expensive. Usually there are a few companies that are industry specialists so that the sites they produce and maintain are templates so that development costs are shared by a number of customers. They employ people to update the sites regularly and those costs are shared for further efficiency. Doesn't the "club industry" have some vendors to look at? Do we use any professional web service companies at all, ever?

For those of you who have missed it we have gone through at least 3 website upgrades in the last 5 years( that I recall) With the last being completed late last year when the entire site was moved to the cloud as I stated above. Every attempt has been made to keep the site updated and secure in the ever changing Web World at significant expense to the club.
We are in contract with a professional web developer who is in the top of the field in the US and we are fortunate to have him.

There will be open slots for two new Trustees this election cycle and I encourage anyone with interest to consider running especially anyone with web skills and or knowledge of phpBB, Ruby on Rails and cloud networks.

Mr. Murray - your above assumption about a different thread is surprise, wrong and your implication that the current site is operating like a 15 year old entity is misinformed at best.

How could you possibly be accused of being contemptuous?

So I guess you were referring to implied contempt in the same post and not some previous contempt.

It is not so much that the site is dated in design as it is that the content is not fresh and entertaining. The way to drive traffic to a website is keep the content new to the visitor so they visit often. Pictures, videos and articles are popular attractions as well as the forums. If you want traffic you have to entertain the visitors.

Are our paid website vendors responsible for keeping content entertaining, fresh and easy to navigate? How do they receive pictures, videos, and articles that are of interest to 356 fans? Are we getting what we contracted for or are we simply paying for hosting and crash repair and that is why content does not change?

I will bow out and leave this to John and Mike to pursue.

Cliff,
It was only a suggestion! Didn't want to start a fight, but I thought it was a good idea. But only if it can be done. As I said, I know nothing about websites but if it's too involved or causes our overworked web master more stress! Leave it Curt? or see it as a challenge?
Play nice !
Kind regards
Jay

Cliff,
You are such a valuable expert on 356 engines that I think most folks are hesitant to let you know how far off the mark you are on things social. On the one hand, I love your inputs on engines, carbs, tuning, racing etc, but on the other hand your constant harassment of the club volunteers is a total turn-off. Earlier it was term limits, now you are off on criticizing the website. Please think about what you are doing... demotivating the folks who make this thing work. If you feel you must speak up on something, then do so once but then let it go. One well thought out opinion is sufficient. Give the club a break.
