Here's a pic of the gauges in my '63. It's important to know that the scales are specific to Porsche, ie, 0-70psi for the oil pressure and +/- 60 amps for the ammeter.

Conrad...it was hand made for me by "Austin" at 356 Unlimited in Melbourne, FL. The general form nicely matches the B-T6 dash after removing the ashtray. IF an ashtray is desired it could be mounted on that bracket below the gauges, although it might be a "knuckle buster" when shifting into third.

As Peter said, shifting into 3rd could be a knuckle buster. You could always swap out the shifter to one for a C model, shorter due to the panel under the ash tray.

that internal shunt ammeter would require some huge wire

For extra gauges, you can find various 1 or 2 or 3 gauge mounts starting with VDO and others -- do a hunt on Google. -- look like photo below. VDO numbers are : 240 027 240 028 240 029 North Hollywood Speedo can supply and gauges with green 356 faces.
