How to assemble shifter

#1 Post by Scott Halperin »

So now is the time to install my shifter into my 64 356. Only issue is I did not take it apart so I don't know how it goes back together. Looks simple enough, but I think I am missing a part. I replaced the bushings, but not sure what to do with the guide. There are three holes. It seems the lone hole might be clamped between the body and the shifter. If this is correct do the other two holes get used? There is a part listed in the parts book as a support, but it calls for only one. Do I use this to hold the guide in place and if so only use one?

Hi Scott. You will have fun with this. You need 2 of this part http://www.stoddard.com/69542421300.html the guide ring support piece fasten on each of the front holes. Actually a bolt goes through the support to the shown piece which has it's 2 legs upwards with one leg capturing the side wall of the tunnel. Lots of fun putting these together:>) The rear hole is used as you thought and also the shifter housing bolt holds that rear together. In the attached photo someone actually took a picture from below that shows the flat side of the part installed and the guide ring in place without the bushing. This is the bushing: http://www.stoddard.com/69542421101.html The double tube in the photo is for heater cable. It is slightly longer on one side which goes on passengers side. I am in awe of whoever managed to take the photo. I have replaced the shift bushings on all 4 356s I have owned. BTW when it is time to install the cup bushing you just install it on the end of the shifter by giving it a hit with dead blow hammer or rubber hammer. And although not asked heater assembly installs on passenger front by the shifter assembly bolt. PS The guide ring assembly goes above the tunnel like in your top photo.

Doug, thanks so much. This all makes sense. I have one of the supports so I will need to buy one more. The rest seems clear now.

Doug,

I did replace the guide ring already. I used the same technique that I used for the parking cable guides. Dunked into a cup of hot water for a couple minutes and then shoved it in. This technique worked well.

Thanks

Re: Shifter change with transmission rebuild

Is it necessary to take out shifter assembly when changing transmission? I had the transmission changed in my car and found the shifter assembly looked different. I asked mechanic and he said he took out shifter assembly when he put in rebuilt trans. Is it necessary then to take out shifter assembly??

Not necessary on a B or C I have never had an A or PreA but doubt you would need to remove the shift linkage.
