Hello all,
Anyone can help.......
What was the factory colour of the primer on a 55 Pre A?
as i would like to get it right from start and prime the car with the correct Glasurit primer colour.

On my 53 I seem to remember lots of red oxide primer under the paint.

The red oxide primer was definitely used under the Lechler Nitrolack metallic colors, and probably all the Nitrolack colors. In 1954, Reutter switched the solid colors to enamel; metallics remained Nitrolack. At least some of the enamel colors of 1955 had a grey primer.

Hello, Where I was 99.99% sure that I was looking at the original undercoat on my Azure Blue '55 I'd say it was light grey, that sort of 'dovey grey' that has a hint of blue, but this could be the light, colour bleed or just my colour perception. Not exactly a definitive answer but I hope it is of some help.

Thanks for the confirmation on the light grey primer Vincent. Did you door hinge cover come with a "Kunstharzlack" tag, or only just the Reutter chassis number tag? Curious when Reutter started adding these for cars painted with enamel.

Thanks Guys,
Super as always.
My 55 was originally Turkish Red so it was a solid colour and there was only the Reutter Chassis Number tag so no Lack
It must be Light Gray.
Will get some From Glasurit.
Thanks again for your support

Hello James, mine also only had the Chassis number plate.
After all your answers to my questions I'm delighted to be able to help & I have no doubt there will be many more as I put KCT back together, as it's been years since it came apart, with only some of the dismantling carried out by myself with all the necessary photos and notes.

If you want to color match the primer color for 356 A, and also later models, locate a pair or original hood hinges or check your hood hinges with the hood removed and note that they are painted with gray as well as a small area of body color of the car.
