64 Battery replacement

#1 Post by Bill Federighi »

I'm looking to replace my 6 volt wet cell with Optima style battery. Not sure if Optima makes replacement. If anyone has replaced, would appreciate Optima number or any other manufacture that would fit and have same amperage.

Thanks Bill

Optima makes a 6 volt battery. I have one in my 356C. P/N 8010-044(Red Top 6v) , 800 CCA. This battery is not as wide as the standard ones. I cut some pieces of wood and fitted them into the battery compartment to help hold it in place.
It is an outstanding battery. Bought mine 6 yrs. ago from Big Time Battery tel. 815-467-7679. $129 with free shipping.

If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Here is an article about cloaking box for Optima: https://porsche356registry.org/article/175 found in resources section. NAPA sells a nice 6V battery. Stock size is 19L for conventional lead acid battery. Interstate also sells a 6 volt 19L battery. I am sure there are others.

Woody's Custom Shop on Ebay has a box that the Optima fits into, making it look like a lead/acid 6V battery. A little pricey though.

I wasn’t concerned about cloaking, just wanted more space for the tools, spares and 944 jack that I carry in my T6. The 6V Optima mounts about 1/2” away from the bulkhead leaving a lot of extra room.

Gary Koehler...I like the way you mounted the Optima battery. Was this made custom or can the base and brackets be purchased?

Here's what the Optima with a Cloaking Device looks like in my C coupe.

I still have a 6V Optima battery and the cloaking device. A couple things to consider: the original L-bracket won't work as it is too short and the plastic battery cover doesn't fit as the top of the device is larger.

Mike,
I did not have those issues with my installation. Everything went in without modification.
Maybe the cloaking device is different now(??)

Thanks for the info, Dan. I did buy one of the first ones made. Who did you purchase yours from? Maybe I can get the specs.
