Hood Straps
I am considering placing a set of hood straps on my C car.
I would like to get some advise from members who have gone down this road.
Can you advise who produces good quality straps, there appears to be a few different manufactures of these out there.
I would like to get a set of tan straps, it would be great if someone was producing vintage aged leather ones.
If anyone can offer some advise on their straps I would very much appreciate it.

Re: Hood Straps
Was there a time when straps were required in racing? When did the factory use them? I never understood why something so cumbersome was needed when the hood latch worked fine and had a built in secondary latch.

Not to everyone's taste, I agree Martin.
Hence the reason why I posted this in the outlaw section.

Re: Hood Straps
Bil, were those wheels the same as a pushrod car? The hubcaps seem to stick out a lot, or is it just compared to mine with 5.5" wheels that it looks that way?

Re: Hood Straps
Martin........the wheels are 4 1/2x15 alloy/steel wheels with the Carrera offset for the 60mm front brakes, 19mm spacers on the rear drums.....and those were the original dated aluminum hubcaps! Of all the Porsches I`ve owned, that was the rarest.

Re: Hood Straps
So the offset was different to keep the track the same? That would explain the look. I am totally jealous that you had that car.

Re: Hood Straps
Did you get an answer re: best hood straps? I would recommend Dusty Johnson, a 356 owner himself. His straps are fantastic - I have a set on my car.

Re: Hood Straps
Unfortunately the thread took a turn towards a discussion on wheels Robert.
But I appreciate you bringing it back in line.
Would you believe I settled on a set of Dustys straps in antique finish.
I havnt seen them yet as I am abroad at the moment, however they do come highly recommended.
Would you have a picture showing the straps fitted to your car Robert.

Rather than drill holes you might consider doing what Sebastian did: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=34348&hilit=hood+straps

Doug,
I havnt committed yet to the straps, and probably won't until I near the end of my restoration.
However when I do make a decision, it will be to leave them off completly or put them on permanently.

To answer Martin's question, straps were required at Leman's, see pictures of 1951 1952 and 1953 Lemans cars, the 356Sl.

Re: Hood Straps
It was a good idea to use hood straps with the removal of the hood latch pin.
It didn't take too much of a shunt when racing to jam the hood making it hard to refill without an outside filler.
Other than that they're a nice cosmetic addition and a pain.
