Re: Textured underside of front and rear lids on early A car
Hi Bruce,
Thanks, this gives us another data point. Would you have any pictures you can share? Especially interested in seeing where the undercoating ends on both lids.
Thanks,
Joris

Hi Joris,
I'll try and take a picture this afternoon to post. Textured area on this car is on the underside sheet metal only- not on the frame.
That is the way it was when I originally purchased it in 1966.

Joris,
Here is pictures of the under side of #56731 front lid. I tried to angle shop light above camera to give a shadow effect so texture would show up better-- it made the color look orange.
Thanks,
Bruce

Bruce, thanks for sharing. Is the texture original or was it replaced when repainting the car? So for all the unrestored cars I have seen with the textured panels had the frames textured also

Re: Textured underside of front and rear lids on early A car
Joris,
In about 1967 I remember taking the hood off and used paint stripper to take the paint off the top surface. It had bubbles in the finish and was coming off in spots. I did nothing to the bottom of the hood at that time, I remember the rough texture but can not remember if it was on the frame part also. The car was restored in Europe in the early 1980's and I repurchased it in 2002. This is how it looked then and now.
Hope I have not confused the issue any.

My original paint 1956 coupe #56836 is Silver with Silver wheels . It has the heavy undercoating on the inside of both deck lids. When I purchased the car I did not think it was original as I had never seen this before.

Hi Dennis,
Thanks for sharing those great pictures! Question, does your car have the same texture in the door pockets?
Thanks,
Joris

Joris
No textured surface in the door pockets. Door pockets are typical as in later cars. Black brushed on tar and waffle print sound deadening material on the door side of the closing panels. I have heard that some cars had the door pockets finished with the same texture as the hood and deck lid but have never seen a car with this area finished this way.Interesting that as you can see from the photos the front hood hinges were done the same way meaning the hood was installed when it was sprayed on then painted at least on the bottom side. On the rear deck lid the hinges do not have the texture but are painted silver. This would mean the texture was sprayed on before the deck lid was installed , or the hinges were masked off when sprayed which I doubt.

Yes, I noted that. Very interesting. Yours is the first where I have sen that. The other original cars I have picture of all have clean hinges.

Coupe 56581 has the textured front and rear lids too. Texture on the inner lid frame too. This car has a Kardex date of 6 June 1956.

Not sure about the door pockets. The hinges for the front and rear lids are not textured.
