Loose the spinners, they only serve to indicate the non functioning application of a technology that in its day had the purpose of holding the wheel to the brake hub. Your wide five lugs are clearly the means of your wheels attachment. A clean hub cover (without wings) would be just as handsome and true to the nature of your wheels attachment. Your application reminds me of how we used clothesline pins to attach playing cards to our bicycles in order to make more noise when cruising our neighborhood streets. Non functional spinners are just visual noise and just wrong for a 356, unless they are authentic knock off applications. Just my form follows function ethic surfacing where its too often not wanted. Other than the spinners, you've got a beautiful ride, and I do appreciate the wheels you found to set it off. Are they lighter than the steel rims, 15 or 16's?

Re: Non-stock wheels on your 356? Post a pic!
A million years ago my brother sent me a set of wheels off his 63 coupe. The are Drum Brake Fuchs looking casting made by AWE 5.5X15 (see photos). Not having a need for them, I just left them in the cardboard shipping boxes unopened. Now after many moves I can not find the lug nuts for them.
The face of the wheel looks like the lugs are flat or had a washer?? There is no taper or radius The Hole is 17.5mm and the washer face is 29mm. Did that have an insert to a sleeve under the flat?
Does anyone have a set of these wheels or a lug nut they could photo for me.
Thanks
John

Figured out the AEW Fuchs, had to make the lug nuts from a larger size. Looks and works great.

Hello Mark,
Did you extend the studs on all the wheels?
Thanks,
Fred

Fred, I used 911/Fuchs-type black anodized lug nuts on the stock studs, torqued to 90 ft-lbs. A fellow 356er had done the same so I tried it and have put about 700 miles on the setup.

Installed and tested. They work fine, new lug nuts are a pain to install do to the clearance on the machined sleeve part of the nuts. I powder coated them to match the car, will do the black on the wheels to Slate Gray this winter. The center caps won't clear the front bearing caps so I will need to make an adapter to complete the installation.

Re: Non-stock wheels on your 356? Post a pic!
I see on page 14 cj murray uses 205/55-16 tires which means he using a 16 inch wheel. There is sure more tires in this size to choose from and not all that expensive. They would also give it lower look with more tire surface. I would like to go that route. I would like to get the coddington wheels for my 63 wide five drum brakes. I looking at my 88 carrera which has 205/55 x 16's in the front. The tread width is much wider than my 185/70 x 15 on the 63. I just don't see the clearence for the back wheel wells on the 63 at least on the outside. The hundred dollor question is if the 205/55 x 16 would work then what would the off set be for the rear wheels to make the fit and with out rubbing. With my 185/70 x 15 on the front of the 63 I get a little rub on the inside when lock to lock so maybe there would need to be a offset on the front as well. I tried emailing cj murray but have not gotten a response as of yet. May be I should call Chris at coddingtons. Hope fully some here can answer this question.
