Checked my records, Llew.
2-054 Sold to Fritz Koster, then Mexico 1953, Guillermo Suhr, #199. Mexico 1954, Jacqueline Evans, #100. Currently in Mexico, Roberto Bender.
2-055 Sold to Ed Trego, raced by Karl Brocken, then Chuck Finkl, eventually to Johnny Sandhoff in Boulder Colorado, bought by me in 1971 (see my avatar).
Now in the Collier collection.
Hope that clarifies it.

Hi Vic,

Ho,ho..... You owned 55?

Please, can you tell me if 55 had one interior light in the engine compartment? (Below the engine lid latch)
Or, may be, some holes (for screws or electrical wires)?

It's been a long time, and the car was all apart. I can't answer that question properly.
I also owned 2-057.

So has 356/2-063 been restored with an ill-fitting windscreen rubber? I can't tell from the video and photos on-line, but I do hope so!

Cool Vic! Do you know if 055 was the one that set the 1500cc records at Montlhéry?

Here it is as painted up by Ed Trego and raced by Karl Brocken at Vero Beach in 1952.

And here's both 356/2-055 of Ed Trego (Karl Brocken driving) and 356/2-063 of Johnny von Neumann at Pebble Beach on April 20, 1952. This was before von Neumann painted his car red and chopped the top off.

Here's some more photos of 055 on the Porsche stand at the Paris auto show in 1951 celebrating the Montlhéry records for 1500cc. Still has the bugs and dirt on the front of the car from that feat.

That first photo comes from Phil Carney's article about Ed Trego and Karl Brocken's racing efforts in 356 Registry Magazine vol 33 #5 p14.

Olivier Auvray wondered about an engine compartment light on Vic's 356SL. The following photo from the Collier museum shows the original rear wall of the engine compartment of 3003A ( previously one of the 3 SL's with chassis number 356/2-055). The small holes are for mounting bolts. The large hole is for the power lead. The lower hole is for a switch. 356/2-058 has a hole for a trouble light receptacle below the light switch.
The 1951 Lemans class winner 356/2-063/056 does not currently have the inverted "widows peak" at the center top of the windshield rubber gasket.

Thanks for clarifying David.

Vic & David, any idea which engines the 3 SLs that came to Hoffman at the end of 1951 had? I suspect they were the early 528 engines (P-400xx), but perhaps they were 527 engines (P-30xxx) instead? Curious, as the early history of the 528 engines is a bit murky. Certainly the cars that were at Le Mans in 1951 had the 1100 engines for the 1100 class, but Hoffman was unlikely to want 1100 race cars when the the class cutoffs were 1500 in the US.

I know 356/2-046 had engine 30006 for some time, 356/2-055 had 30010.

Hi Jules,
Which -055 car had 30010? The Collier -055 or the museum -055? How do you know this? Merten's car (-061) has 40010. I have an aluminum case number 300357 (a 527 number) that is
stamped "1952 528"and came from Phoenix (Dick Christiansen). Do either of the engines you refer to have aluminum cases?
