1951 356 Pre A Split Window
Ok so got to look at the 1951 Split Window Coupe. Not original motor. Silver repaint and body straight all around. Interior in great condition and has a plaque on glove box that states this car was exhibited in the 4th annual Indianapolis Custom Auto Show May 23rd - May 31st 1953 500 Mile Race Week. I can't figure how to attach photos. Anyone have an idea of value? I've seen some that are total wrecks sell for $50,000 just for the VIN and this car is complete with everything but the engine even the drivers side sunshade which to my surprise was actually clear. VIN # 12264

Re: 1951 356 Pre A Split Window
Odd chassis number. Cars 12001 to 12084 were '53 model year Reutter coupes built at the end of 1952, and the Gläser cabriolets and competition roadsters were 12301 to 12387 approximately, most built during 1952 and early '53. Perhaps 12264 is a replacement chassis circa 1952? Would be interesting to see photos, especially the front trunk area.
Interesting car!

I don't know the car you are looking at, and haven't seen any pictures, but ...
I think a complete and relatively correct '51 with a non-matching, but period correct engine, could easily be worth $125,000+
Approx 6 months ago a split window "roller" sold for ~$95,000 at auction.

I believe 11264 would be a 1951 model built in 1952? Didn't the '51 split-window models go through chassis 11360? Certainly car 11345 (more photos) is a split-window '51 model year car built in 1952.

16 inch rims? Toolkit? Turbo rings? Horn ring? Radio? Dash clock?
These are little things that will impact the price a bit. All together they would cost nearly 20K to get together.

Unless you're Steve, then you find them all for pennies on the dollar. Lucky!Steve Harrison wrote:16 inch rims? Toolkit? Turbo rings? Horn ring? Radio? Dash clock?

Ha Ha,..
Well,...I wouldn't say pennies,...but I did have some really good help along the way. !
Someday I'm going to write it all up and put it out there. I ebayed a lot, but when it came down to the really hard to find things,...it was Registry guys who came through. That's enthusiasm for the marque right there I tell ya.
None of that stuff is "essential" but it does make for a nicer car in the end if you can get those things to go with it. There are even crazier options like the bench seat. I was wanting to put it on John's radar that if those things are there, or some combination thereof, it's no small consideration on value.

Re: 1951 356 Pre A Split Window
Hi,
My chassis #10547 appears to have been built in April 1951 but the good folks at Porsche have not been able to get the information to issue a COA. Have even tried pestering a guy at the archives in Ludwigsburg with no avail. My car could be classified as a "shell" since the interior is non-existent as well as having a VW engine and tranny. The previous owner wanted to use it on the race track...
As I'm new to the Registry I guess what I'm asking is whith whom should I speak to or contact in order to get ideas on whether it is worth restoring as close as possible to original (starting with finding a dashboard...) or just go and build a respectable outlaw.
I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

Neat car Javier!
Your car may have lost many of it's original parts over the years, but your "shell" is perfect for driving. Put a ton of worry free km's on it while you search for some missing parts. Once you see how scarce (and expensive) parts are for early cars, you'll have a better idea what you're up against. 8)

Re: 1951 356 Pre A Split Window
Thanks Scott!
Well, plenty of things have happened and I was able to find a dashboard and original banjo steering wheel so I'm biting the bullet and beggining with the restoration!
Have it almost 75% disassembled, engine pulled and as soon as the front suspension, tranny, doors-hood and engine lid come off, it will go to glass-blasting.
Still looking for the Viegel instruments, seats, and the usual odd knick nacks.

Looks like you've got your work cut out for you. I started with a similar list of parts to find. This site's classifieds are a great resource.
Is that a beetle gas tank? Interesting tunnel ... were the seats bolted to the floor?

The tunnel is VW beetle but looks like the original tunnel is still there. It would be intresting to know the thought behind doing it.
