Upgrading Brakes to 924/944 Calipers

#1 Post by David Maxwell »

Hi everyone,

I've read about a few cars upgrading to 924/44 calipers, but I can't seem to find any information on how difficult (and wise) an upgrade this is. I know the stock calipers are more than adequate for as light a car as the 356 in stock trim, but there is an appeal to having larger calipers. If 924/44 calipers aren't the way to go, are there any other advisable options to the stock calipers?

David; welcome aboard.
But I will argue against changing from the stock 356C calipers.
They are certainly capable of anything we can ask of them.
Changing for the hell of it is not wise.

I'm curious as well. Can anyone shed some light on this conversion?

Anyone got this info? Looked at converting my brum brakes (63B) but see conversion is $4-5k! Ouch!
There have to be other options.

There are options. I converted to Wilwood calipers some years ago and they work great. I designed and built mounting brackets that made it basically a bolt up, reversible conversion. The build was documented in the 356 Registry a few years back.

Any idea what to search for to find your write-up?

The write up is in Vol 33, #1; May/June 2009. Pg 60.
I am still running this set-up and remain very pleased.

I have installed willwood 4 pots on my t5. Easy job for a weekend hack. The complete kit from the guys at airkewld was under $1500, and was a complete bolt on, reversible option. It also forced me to convert my brake system to dual circuit, great peace of mind. I have kept my drums on the rear, as with the willwoods up front, it stops like a late model 911!

Read the article. One question...does emergency brake still work?

Yes, e-brakes work fine. Only the caliper changed

I’m sold. Where do I find the brackets? Anyone manufacture them? Or, does anyone have drawing of the brackets? Otherwise, I’m good to go.
