Re: Outlaw Engine Choices
Jacques, I guess that's the problem. I have done an IRS conversion on my most recent squareback and I love it but I don't want to cut about my 54 year old 356. I know I am asking for the world, I guess I'm just trying to find out if there are any swing arm 5 speed options.

Re: Outlaw Engine Choices
So for those who are interested, I followed up a lead I saw on this forum and emailed WEVO and they ARE making a 5 speed swing axle transmission that bolts into a 356 B and C. They have one that has been on the road for a few thousand miles and have made 5 more on pre-orders. As soon as I know more I will share. Exactly what I am looking for!

Re: Outlaw Engine Choices
David,
When you talked to WEVO did they say if they were using a new case, or have they adapted a 741 case? I ask because fitting an A nose cone to a 741 case allows it to be used in an A.

Re: Outlaw Engine Choices
Hi Bill
I believe it is 901 based. the shift rod is low and engages the operating rods mid travel between 2-3/4-5. initially when it was envisioned the 822 gearbox the shifting was done in the bell housing for the mid engine cars. the 5spd variants of the 356 box like the 718 the shifting was done alongside the nose cone. the 644 shifting arraignment precludes the additional gear in the nose cone.

Re: Outlaw Engine Choices
Yes, Hayden at WEVO said it is a 356 box with 901 internals if that makes sense?

Re: Outlaw Engine Choices
Hi David
The 901 internals require a new housing/nose cone. Yes this is an appealing conversion but the logical path is to convert the suspension to IRS and use the original 901case. check out the post that was moved from this one.
cheers

Cliff, that's a very nice set of curves. Would you be so kind as to share the details of the build. I swear, I won't tell a soulC J Murray wrote:Here is a 356 that you can drive around town at 2000rpm in 4th.
My vintage race motor made the same HP, but all at the top end, with much less mid-range torque.

If it's your wife's car and she just drives the car down to store for milk and bread, here's an option...

Re: Outlaw Engine Choices
CJ, more about torque! I'm all ears. Are you talking 1600cc or something with big jugs? Very interesting performance profile, did ya just whip that out on a sheet of paper or is that for real?

I hear that was a 4WD and they burned the wheels right off.Trevor Gates wrote:Emil Wojcik wrote:What ever happened to the guy that was posting about a mid engine 356 he was working on a couple years ago?
