'59 356 A coupe door identification

#1 Post by mike dunn »

Could someone help me identify which of my doors are most correct. My drivers door handle center of push button is located approx 14 1/2" from bottom edge of door and the dished area of the door beneath the handle is about 2 3/4" across from top to bottom. My passenger door handle center of push button is approx. 15 1/8" from bottom edge of door and the dished area is about 2 7/8" across from top to bottom. What have I got here? Which is correct? Thank you!

FWIW I measured the same distance on a Convertible D. It looks to be just under 15 inches.

My '59 A driver side door measures 14 7/8" from the bottom edge to the approximate center of button - the indentation is about 2 5/8" top to bottom

Thank you for the replies! Any ideas what my drivers door may have been from with the lower handle location? The inner door structure and door jam mechanisms all seem correct. Someone mentioned possibly being re skinned with an older door skin?

Have you checked the VIN number stamped on the inner door surface ?
In particular the last 3 digits of the VIN are stamped there
Have you got a T-1 door ?

It has been a couple of years since but as I remember my drivers door with the 14 1/2" measurement last 3 digits matched up with my vin #'s. My passenger door that seems to match the dimensions of the other replies is actually a replacement with totally different #'s. That is why I am a bit stumped! Did earlier cars have lower handle locations or maybe convertibles that my door frame may have been re skinned with? Both doors with the interior panels removed are of the same T2 and up design. Thanks

when looking for donor doors for a 1959, what model years would be a correct replacement?

i am restoring a 1959 coupe that came with mulitple parts in a barn.
Currently have 3 doors with vent windows and two doors that are bare. (vent window doors are obviously wrong)
My VIN is 108252
the two bare doors have the number 759 on each of them.

Oddly enough, on my Kardex, it shows my build date of 1/7/59

Hi all
Were our cars manufactured using the metric system? Would it be better then to use the correct metric dimensions ?
15" and how many eighths !! What? Who still uses this crazy imperial system?

If the good Lord had intended us to use the metric system, he would have given us ten fingers.

Its mostly us Americans that ignant enough to use that old system... The conv D and roadsters have a completely different door so don't consider their dimensions.

anybody have a picture of a 1959 coupe door on the inside with the door panel removed?
Supposedly 1958 and 1959 are the same door. (different then the early A door ineer structure)

What makes the 58/59 door different then a 1960+ door?

58(T2) and 59(T2) Coupe doors are the same. They are way different than T1 doors that proceeded them. A T5 door is very similar but has a bit of difference at the top to support the window frame with vent windows. The T5 and T2 doors appear to have been made from the same stamping.
