Ashtray Bracket Liner
Guys,
A few issues back I discussed the liner that was affixed to the ashtray bracket and appears to be used as an anti-squeak liner between the bracket and the car. Below is a picture of the two brackets original to my C coupe and C cab with different types of contact paper used as the liner. The '64 cab liner is on the right, the '65 C coupe liner is on the left.
I was contacted by a few members describing the liners on their ashtray brackets soon after, but that died off pretty quickly.
Anyone else have some examples?

Re: Ashtray Bracket Liner
Hi Kurt,
I heard from a reader that he had the clear vinyl on an original piece too. I have only seen the orange liner on later cars but we cannot make that a data point. I wouldn't be surprised that something as unimportant as these liners went under the old "they used whatever was available at the time" explanation.
The liner that came on my coupe is some sort of contact paper that has what almost looks like the Chinese alphabet on it.
Regards,

Sebastian,
I took the attached pictures of the Ashtray bracket liner fron my late '64 Cab. I believe that it is original to the car. It is made of clear vinyl as the pictures depict.

ashtrays from my bin full of ashtrays. I don't have any idea what year or model they came from, though.

Re: Ashtray Bracket Liner
Jim,
It appears that the orange and clear liners are the most common, but check out the ashtray for sale in our classifieds that has a checkerboard patterned liner. Could that be original, much like my "Chinese writing" liner? I mean, why would anyone bother to replace those?

Sebastian,Are you as jelous as I am,that checkered pattern is the best,it seems odd that anyone would ever want to, or need to replace these, unless for detail? And they all appear to be the same size.Wonder if they cut hundreds at a time or as needed on the line?

The one on my 64C coupe, which I bought in 1976, looks like these.Jim Breazeale wrote:ashtrays from my bin full of ashtrays. I don't have any idea what year or model they came from, though.
I have not looked at the one in my 65C (yet).

Apologies to Michael Rogers for using his picture from the classifieds, but I agree with Karl and think that this is the coolest one I've seen, including the "Chinese writing" liners that Mark Reich and I have!karl schuenemann wrote:Sebastian,Are you as jelous as I am,that checkered pattern is the best,it seems odd that anyone would ever want to, or need to replace these, unless for detail?

I had the checked stuff on mine too. I cleaned it off (OOPS) thinking it was put there by a prior owner for whatever reason. My guess is that they used the stuff to line the drawers at the factory...........................

It certainly does look like a kind of contact paper.Frederick Adler wrote: My guess is that they used the stuff to line the drawers at the factory...........................
Will concours judges now pull your ashtray bracket out to check the liner?

Re: Ashtray Bracket Liner
We have seen quite a few of these liners over the years. Our favorite is of the ladies sunbathing on the beac(no picture). Our guess was that a tech discovered that contact paper/wallpaper from the shop down the street would hold the ashtray screws in place while he/she tightened the machine screws.

Re: Ashtray Bracket Liner
Many years ago I bought the paper liner to the Registry members with a photograph published in the magazine.
It would appear that the later cars had the plastic tape type lining and that till at least B models they were made from a piece of wallpaper.
Less than a mile from the factory there was a shop selling wallpaper.
I speculate that they sent an apprentice down to the shop either to acquire an old sample book or a roll of their cheapest paper.
Maybe members could photograph their ashtrays the next time they are removed for other work and we can build a database?
